Monthly Pricing Shuffle
So here's the deal:
I have two Tivos: A dual tuner Series 2 that I pay $6.95 a month and a Series 3 HD tuner that I pay $12.95 a month.
I would like to replace the Series 2 tuner with either a new or refurbished HD tuner. If I do that, however, and replace it for the older Series 2 tuner it looks like my monthly subscription for that room will go from $6.95 to either $9.95 or $12.95 a month.
How can I work it so I keep the $6.95 a month for one unit and $9.95 or $12.95 for the second unit?

Don't activate the new Tivo as a new subscription, do a Service Number swap on your account. When you get your new Tivo, log in to your account and do a "Change Service number" Change the Service Number for the S2 to the new HD Service Number. Your account and monthly bill will stay the same. I have upgraded two S2s to the TivoHDs without issues.

In addition to TriBruin's advice, be advised that you can not get the Tivo directly from Tivo as all units purchased from them require a subscription. Refurbished units from Tivo typically do not qualify for Multi Service Discount. As long as you get the Tivo from somewhere else, you can swap for the grandfathered $6.95 MSD unit.

Thanks to both of you.
What if I tried to stitch the numbers on my account so that the HD was at $6.95 and then the Series 2 was at $12.95.
Then, I could add a new subscription and delete the old Series 2.

You would have to call to do that and I am not sure if they would or not. The easy advice already given is best. Buy a TiVo at sears or Costco or Amazon for $200 to $250.
then go online and swap the TSN of the newly bought TiVo HD in palce of whichever one you want to drop. That will deactivate the one you pushed out automatically.

I called and switched no problem in exactly that way.
I'm not sure what it gets you though that you couldn't anyway. If you like no more commitment, stick with $12.95. If you want to get a discount through a new service plan, you can get that too, and also swap out the series 2 for the new HD unit.

I don't care what happens to the $12.95 unit but I don't want to lose the $6.95 charge.

The first unit is always $12.95 so if you terminate the $12.95 unit the $6.95 unit will automatically go up to $12.95.

I have done this exact thing with my 6.95 monthly. Simply buy the TiVo HD at a good B&M/online price and swap out the new TSN for the series 2 DT. The 6.95 stays intact and now rides on the Tivo HD. It really is that simple.

If you do that, you can never get the $6.95 rate again.

You need to buy it somewhere other than TiVo. If you buy the new HD anywhere (Best Buy, Amazon, Sears, etc) then you just change the serial number on the TiVo website from your Series 2's to your new HD's and the pricing will stay where it is.
If you buy directly from TiVo, it will be treated as a new subscription and you won't get the discount.

No. If you've had a warranty replacement of a lifetime unit, call Tivo and they will do it for you.
