tivo -> mpg

For several years I have used Direct Show Dump to convert my .tivo files to .mpg (on a Win-XP system).

Direct Show Dump will not install on my new Vista machine as it complains about needing ".Net Framework 1.1.4322" even though I already have something like .Net 3.5 already installed.

Any advice on how to get DSD installed on Vista or suggestions for a different program to convert from .tivo to .mpg or .mp4 format?

Looks great. I have downloaded it but don't know what to do to (i) install it and (ii) run it.

Can anyone give directions?

It's a command line tool:
tivodecode --mak MAK --out "FILE.mpg" "FILE.TiVo"
(Replace MAK with your Media Access Key number and FILE with actual file name)
There are several GUIs out there that make use of tivodecode among them Tivo Decoder UI (.NET) and kmttg (Perl)

You can also look for WinTivoDecode, which is a nice windows front-end to TivoDecode.

Simplest thing to me would be to install .NET framework 1.1 on your computer (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en) and continue to use your old tool. When a program requires a version of .NET, it's looking for that specific version. A later version, like 3.5, will not suffice. Thanks Microsoft, I have 6 versions of .NET installed on my laptop.

This kmttg package of pre-compiled windows binaries includes tivodecode.exe (in tivodecode folder):

tivodecode does no encoding. It simply removes the 'copy protection/encryption' on the file. If your resulting file is choppy, then either

1) your computer is having problems playing mpeg-2 files. You may want to get a different codec or player, or else just tell kmttg to convert it to an mpeg-4 or xvid.

2) or your original video from the tivo was already choppy to start with. Nothing will fix that...
