FOX's Kevin Reilly: "We're Going To Let Dollhouse Play Out For 13 Episodes"

http://www.thrfeed.com/2009/01/fox-e...in-reilly.html

Quote:
>> On placing "Dollhouse" on Friday nights: "Joss Whedon does a certain kind of show. He’s right in the zone again on that. It's the kind of show that we know has a core passionate audience. In some other scheduling scenarios there could be enormous pressure on it ... we have a very compatible lead in with 'Sarah Connor'... we’re going to let the show play out for 13 episodes and hopefully it will catch on ... if we can do some business there, that would be a great thing for the future.

•Dollhouse, Joss Whedon's new show, has undergone reshoots and rewrites, but Reilly now says the show is where he wants it to be creatively. "Joss has done his thing," he said. "I want him to just do his show. We had a couple of false starts, and then, frankly, we just left him alone."

Early buzz from critics has been lukewarm at best, but Reilly puts it in the eyes of viewers. "You guys should judge for yourself," he said. "Joss is a creative guy, and he does what he believes in. Hopefully you guys believe in it, too." Dollhouse debuts Feb. 13, following Terminator.
Quote:
•The Friday Night Death Slot. Reilly acknowledges that Terminator and Dollhouse have a curse to break on Friday nights, the slot that killed shows such as Firefly and Freakylinks. "Well, that's been the case for a lot of shows, but there've also been a lot of shows that were kind of buried there for a reason," Reilly said. "I think these are two worthy shows, so we'll see what happens."

It's never too soon.
I consider it a pre-emptive strike.

Hey, at least we seem to have a semi-commitment to run the entire 13 episodes.

I'm hoping Kevin Reilly's a man of his word.

My one silver lining here is that, during his tenure at NBC, he was known for being rather patient with shows. The Office wasn't an overnight ratings success at all (it's still not, but it gets decent ratings in the key demo), but he stuck with it.

So will I. Believe me, I'm crossing my fingers that he keeps his word and that Joss is able to score another hit here.

I don't believe him.

If the ratings are abysmal, they'll yank the show after two episodes and put some sort of American Idol recap show in its place.

Translation: This series is DOA, but I hope some of those Whedon nerds get fooled again into thinking we'll give his show a chance, so we can pay some bills.

I think Terminator is already DOA, since it's being preempted during sweeps for the series end of Prison Break.

Not really a "preemption" - they'll have aired all 22 episodes by that point.

Yeah, if anything, Terminator is preempting Prison Break in order to finish out its season.

I agree with those who believe this is DOA. Unless Joss has some some miracle drug that can resuscitate it after those 13 episodes, I'd say it is finished. It is unfortunate that American ID10T is held in higher regard than what is most likely a well-written sci-fi character drama.

I wonder what would happen if Fox moved American ID10T to Friday and Dollhouse was immediately after it. Would that help or hurt it? Would people still watch AI?

Nah, the AI crowd wouldn't "get it" anyway...

BTW, it sounds as if even Joss didn't like the concept when it was first pitched to him, which doesn't do much for my confidence here. I know he can write for crap premises as well as good ones; but if he's not 100% sold on the idea, who's going to sell everyone else on it?

Glad to hear it's going to run the full order. As Reilly said, there's not a lot of pressure in that time slot. If it doesn't do well, it's not likely anything else would do well either, so there's not much reason to pull it. And the commitment to run the full order means people like me are going to be more willing to watch from the start rather than record them and wait to see if it gets renewed. I'll be totally fine if 13 eps is all that ever get shown, provided they get a chance to tell the end of the story.

In a very strange twist of events, Joss Whedon has decided that his newest show for Fox, “Dollhouse”, will air out of sequence. Fans of the man’s work may recall this was one of the many contributing factors to the quick death of “Firefly”, only this time it’s not because of studio interference.

”I showed some scenes to David Lynch and he’s all, ‘Whuh?’ Bad sign,” Whedon posted on his blog recently. “There were some slight issues with tone. I was in a dark, noir kind of place and didn’t bring the visceral pop the network had expected from the script.”

So the episode that was shot as the pilot will now air as the second, and Whedon is going out to shoot a new pilot that makes a little more sense. I guess it’s probably a good sign that he’s making this happen and not Fox, but one cannot ignore the inherent irony.

I'm sure it will be the last episode aired, after the show's already canceled... [you have to admit, the two scenarios are now eerily similar]

Doubtful... what will probably happen is that it'll appear as a 'bonus' on the "entire series" 13 episode DVD set.
