I would post in the HME forum if you haven't already, great idea, always wanted a way to custom organize.

if the movies are on a PC
install Tivo desktop on the PC you have the movies on then use Dekstop feature to publish a specified dir. on the PC to the TiVo. The DVR(s) you push to will have a folder with the same name as the dir on the PC.

if you record the Movies on the DVR
create a wishlist to record those movies and set the wishlist to autorecord - then the movies will end up in a folder with the same name as the wishlist. you will just have to check the wishlist every so often to eliminate movies you do not wnat recorded.
I use a wishlist for Movies - action. I make use of all the logic in wishlist and have a NOT Seagal and some other action hero guys as I have seen their movies before. over time you get a pretty tight wishlist and can manage all your movie recording from just a few of them. I keep sci-fi in separate Wishlist for instance and have a Title of NOT Matrix - since I have seen those too many times already.

I could be wrong, but don't you have to have TiVo Desktop+ to have the push functionality?

There are free apps (pyTivo, streambaby, etc. - see threads on the Home Media Features forum) that do this.

To the OP: pyTivo lets you set up metadata files that will let you specify the SeriesID (see any of the metadata threads on the Home Media Features forum). Episodes of a show will end up in folders on your Tivo as long as the SeriesID is the same for all of them - this is actually the method Tivo uses to do this with the shows you record.

There are various tools for creating these metadata files - those aforementioned threads are the best place to learn about those. I've been doing more streaming of shows than using pyTivo lately, so while I understand the idea behind metadata files I'm not the best person to ask for an easy way to create them - I've just set them up by hand when I've wanted them.

Not sure on needing desktop + or not.

as for metadata folders - you need the series in the guide data as well for the folder top be made. I am currently ripping primeval, a BBC sereis that is not in my guide data. The metadata nicely displays the full series details for each episode but when I copy over 3 of them - no folder
If anyone has helpful advice on how to use the metadata to create folders despite guide data I am all ears.

Plus I think the OP wants to make folders of his own choosing and perhaps put more than one series in it - say a folder for sitcoms or dadsShows. Desktop publish and some manual work will do that.

Oh, I'd forgotten about that - you're right. If at least one episode of the program isn't available somewhere in your current guide data, then the Tivo won't group the shows.

That seems like such a silly limitation, but there it is.

That should work. If it is TV shows and there is guide data for them then it would be in the folder you push from AND in a folder like "according to jim" or whatever the show is.

Also - what kind of movies - I ebt you could make an autorecord wishlist and that would have them all in one folder when recorded.
For instance I record Sci-Fi movies. I make a wishlist and for category pick movies and then sub category Sci-Fi. I set the wishlist to autorecord adn viola - all the movies are in a folder called "movies sci-Fi". I go through it once a week or so and just cancel any movies I do not want. Also you can set it to keep x number of movies if space is an issue. Give wishlists a whirl.

You can. They are hacked just like the later series 2 units and many of the hacks are the same between the S2 and the S3.
