Reactivacting a Cancelled TiVo

I have been a Tivo customer for almost nine years and have loved it but am now running into an issue.

Last June I bought my fourth Tivo - a Tivo HD - to replace my three year old Series 2. We cancelled the subscription to the Series 2 but kept it hooked up to an old TV.

I am interested in reactivating the Series 2 but there is a one year commitment required to reactivate so I'm balking at resubscribing. After talking with Customer Service they told me there is no way to resubscribe without the one year commitment.

This seems unfair as I already fulfilled the original one year commitment on the box plus an additional two years before I upgraded. I want to support Tivo but I am being told they can't take my money without a one year commitment.

Most likely I would go on paying the monthly fee for a year or until I upgrade to another Tivo HD. However the inflexibility over the one year commitment is making me think that it may be better to go with the cable company's DVR on that TV as there are no commitments there.

What do you think - do I have a legitimate gripe or am I just being a whiner?
And is there any way I can get Tivo to take my money without the one year commitment?

Thanks.

TiVo changed their TOS, afaik a while back about the commitments. Live with it or don't subscribe, more or less.

There's no way around the one-year service commitment, but I believe if you bought an HD via a retail channel (anywhere other than tivo.com) in the coming months you could swap its TSN for the S2 TSN under "Manage My Account" on TiVo.com and still fulfill that terms of the service commitment with the new box. I could be wrong...I haven't tried it while under a commitment term.

I think Gonzo is correct. You are committing to TiVo for 1 yr., not necessarily to this box. As such, if you're pretty sure you're going to be using A TiVo product for 1 yr., it's less of a burden.

That said, you would be limiting your choices for purchasing the new TiVoHD by not being able to choose a refurb from www.tivo.com because they recently have only been sold w/ 1 yr. of service.

P.S. I got the same response when I asked a CSR what my options were for a S1 I gave to a friend when I bought my TiVoHD and transferred Lifetime from the S1 to the TiVoHD. The 1 yr. free service is coming to a close on the S1 and I have a friend who wants to keep using it. CSR said if I cancel and they resub it, they must commit for 1 yr.

In how many places are you going to ask this question?

why reactivate if you are not ready to go a year anyway?

Is there some rule against asking around? The OP might remain a satisfied (if not ecstactic) TiVo customer, who could purchase ongoing service and a new box(which carries with it greater ongoing revenue potential than an S2), because of the response he got here. What's wrong with that?

My impression is that the OP will ignore 1000 "no"s and believe a single "yes", then be back here complaining that TiVo screwed them because the one "yes" was incorrect.
