Can I get Tivo service if my cable company doesn't provide DVR service?

I have Charter Cable with an HD receiver. Charter Cable does not offer DVR service in my town. Would I still be able to get a Tivo and Tivo service if my cable company doesn't currently have DVR available? I recently tried to switch to Direct TV but the installation technician informed me that there were too many trees in my yard to receive clear reception.

TiVo is its own unit. If the cable co offers cable cards in your area then you can use a TiVoHD to get most if not all of the digital channels.

Otherwise you can get a Series 2 TiVo and daisy chain it behind a regular cable box.

I'm on Charter in Minnesota. They installed one M-card in my HD TiVo. If you go with the HD TiVo, you can get rid of Charter's HD receiver. You may want to question Charter about how the new billing will work. When I got the HD TiVo, I sent the cable box back with the installer only to see my bill skyrocket. Charter said it was because they only way they could do packages was with a cable box installed - so I had to go pick one up again. They've changed their program since then and now a cable box is not required in my area. Go for the TiVo - you don't need any other dvr service from Charter.

I don't know if this is true in all Charter areas, but here in LA they include a free CableCard (M-card in my case) as part of the digital tier subscription, in lieu of a set top box.
