Intermittent Audio/Video Drop Out

Recently upgraded my home theater system to include a Samsung 850 LCD and a Sony 820 receiver. I have everything (TivoHD, AppleTV and BDP-1500 Blu-Ray) connected by HDMI to the receiver and a single HDMI cable to the 850. I am experiencing intermittent audio/video drop outs from the TivoHD. It occurs about once an hour or so, and is random. The dropout lasts for between 2 and 5 seconds. Anyone have any experience with this type of setup and similar issues over HDMI connection?

It's probably not the HDMI that's doing it - it could be caused by not enough signal strength going into the TiVo. Make sure your runs are short and eliminate as many splitters as possible. If you can, bypass the TiVo for a while and go directly to the TV and see if you still get it. If so, call the cable provider and have them check the signals. Comcast gave me a free booster for my cable line and my issues were cleared up.

You can go into the signal strength menu on your TiVo and have a look at the levels. See if it drops down to a certain range when you get the dropouts. If so, that's your problem.

Sorry, should have been more clear about the issue. When the Tivo HD is directly connected to the TV via HDMI I do not experience the drop outs, only when connected through the receiver.

Someone suggested I turn off the AnyNet+ HDMI control that Samsung uses to control other devices over HDMI, so I am trying that now to see if that improves the situation.

Does this happen when the signal changes resolutions? Like going from an HD show to a SD commercial?

In my setup S3 -> Onkyo -> Samsung plasma, if the resolution changes, the tv sometimes doesn't show anything for a couple of seconds.

I have the Tivo set for 1080i always so no resolution changing. But it also occurs in the middle of programming when no possible resolution change occurs.

The TV has per input picture settings for a reason. Don't use the video switching on the receiver.

Can you explain further? Why shouldn't I use the video switching on the receiver? Cleaner installation with less cables and all audio from all sources more easily decoded as I am assured all audio data is passed to the receiver.

Actually checked more on the suggestion of having all 3 HDMI cables (Tivo HD, AppleTV and Blu-Ray go to TV) and key issue is that TV only passes stereo output back out from optical audio jack from HDMI input signals. If I want surround output formats I would need additional optical cables from each component to the receiver.

Went through troubleshooting with Sony and they claim it is a defective receiver after checking a few things so I am going to exchange it. I am worried it is something between the Tivo HD and the receiver, or the receiver and the LN52A850.

Does anyone here have an STR-DG820 in their setup with a TivoHD and no drop outs?

Yes, I have a TivoHD and a Sony DG820 (less than 30 days old), and I too was having problems with intermittent a/v. It was happening on my Xbox 360 too but not on the AppleTV. I talked to Sony support and after swapping HDMI cables, input ports and some other configuration, it stopped. I really can't say what I did that fixed it.

However, right now the DG820 isn't getting Dolby sound from the Tivo. The DG820 always shows "Linear PCM". I've verified that my Tivo has Audio set to Digital, and the DG820 is set to AFD. With the AppleTV I've verified that the DG820 can correctly receive Dolby Digital and DTS.

My “story”
I have been having the same issues with video and sometimes audio as you have.
I have my LN52A850 connected to the HDMI out of my Sony STR-DG920 and the Tivo HD HDMI out connects to the HDMI Video 1 input of the DG920. I too had to set it up this way to get the 5.1 audio since the LNA850 has no 5.1 pass-through! I think we were all “disappointed” with Samsung for this “low tech” feature!
I have the 20 hr Tivo HD and added the external HDD. I thought this may have been the cause, but I’ve ruled that out for now.
When I first connected my THD to the HDMI in on the LN52A850 everything was perfect. I fed the output of the TV to my older non HDMI A/V Amp and that all worked great. It was then that I discovered I was missing 5.1 audio. After reading the part where this was normal due to no 5.1 pass-through from the A850, I ordered a new A/V/ Amp, the Sony DG920.
I used the 920 to switch all my HDMI devices and the amp HDMI output goes to the A850 in. Everything worked great at the start, but then after about 40 minutes of Tivo viewing the video starts to breakup, or drops out, or even has color flashes!
Since I had added the Tivo external hard drive, and changed the A/V amp as well as cables, inputs, etc, I didn’t know where to start troubleshooting.
Here’s what I’ve done sofar1
I’ve tried plugging in the Tivo into other inputs of the 920 amp. No solution, it follows any input the Tivo is plugged into on the amp. Other devices (Sony BD and Roku) using HDMI have no issues or dropout at all into the same HDMI input the Tivo had trouble with.
A 2+ hour BD movie has no issues when plugged into the amp Video1 input the Tivo had issues with, but the Tivo has issues plugged into the BD input of the amp!
I’ve tried every setting combination in the TV, Amp, and Tivo I can think of, all without success!
But wait! I have found a combination that has been working great so far!
My Tivo is mounted on the top shelf inside my TV Cabinet, with the Sony A/V Amp sitting underneath. The opening is just wide enough to allow the electronics to fit. The height is just enough to allow about 3 inches vertical space between the amp and the Tivo shelf. The Tivo has the ext HDD sitting on top of it and allows 2 inches of space to the top of the cabinet, 3 inches when the HDD case stops. There is a small opening at the rear for cables to pass through. The front is open.
I find that by pulling the amp almost all the way out of the cabinet and resting the front on a small box, the Tivo and the Sony 920, and the Samsung 850. So far with this combination I’m able to watch hours of Tivo without video breakup.
If this continues to be successful, my next step will be to move the Tivo to another location, or put a fan in the cabinet.
As it stands now, I don’t know if it’s the Tivo, Sony Amp, or the 850 TV, heat, or the combination? Since many of us have the approximate combination of equipment, please post your equipment location. I hope we can narrow it all down to HEAT and move on.
If anyone has had an equipment change (Tivo, Amp, TV) and it has, or has not solved this please post that too.
I hope this has helped narrow down what we are all having to cope with
Thank you

HDMI loss of signal

Why not just use Component to eliminate any possibility of HDMI problems?

Hopefully sometime in the last 3 years he solved his problem.
