Tivo HD
Wandered into Circuit City yesterday - the store is closing. They had 10% off many things, including a Tivo HD - the shelf price of which was 217.99 - so cash register wanted $192. Seems like a good deal - question is, do all Circuit City stores have Tivo HD's at $217.99 regular - or is this why this store is going out of business ?

Doesn't CC say they charge the same price in their stores as at the website?
If so, check the website, and see if they give a price for the TiVo HD.

Got one!
Without a HD tv, I had thought I could hold out on getting a TiVo HD. However, with the netflix anouncement and comcast taking away History Channel as of tomorrow, I decided to take the leap.
I got the same deal at a closing CC ($203 and change after taxes). The sticker on the shelf was indeed $217, much lower than I expected. To be sure, I visited another closing CC and its shelf sticker read $258 (they were out of stock as well).
While you should always be careful of such store closing deals (often not deals at all), a smart consumer who knows the going prices online and at other stores can recognize deals like this one.

Circuit City filed bankruptcy today. Last week, they announced that 155 stores (25% of their stores) would be closing. That number will probably be going up, possibly shutting down all their stores after the Xmas shopping season. There may be good deals at stores that are still open, but customer service is going to be shoddy and those "extended warranties" are probably going to be worthless.

Refurb TiVo HDs are $179 at tivo.com.

They filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy. That's the kind where you get to stiff your creditors and get a fresh start. The expectation with Chapter 11 is that you will stay in business, after a "reorganization".

The refurb from Tivo does not qualify for MSD and has to be activated at purchase. My point being, the Circuit City deal was the best I could find and allows me to beg for a Tivo service gift card for Christmas to apply to this new activation.

I just sent a laptop in for repair late last week on one of those "extended warranties", so I was very concerned when I read about the Chapter 11 filing this morning.
But, I found this on a CC FAQ page: "Circuit City Advantage Protection Plans® are provided to customers by unrelated third-party companies and, as a result, are not impacted by the company’s Chapter 11 filing." So hopefully, not only will it not be worthless, but I will also get my repair done and laptop returned shortly.

For what it's worth: all sales in stores closing are final - no refunds, no exchanges. Those stores closing sales are being handled by outsiders. (I heard this in a television news report).
Also...you can't expect the Circuit City Website to meet the discounted prices in stores that are closing. That advertisement that Web and Store prices are identical pertain to stores that are not closing. By the way, this week, the merchandise in stores closing is 10% discounted. Not such a big deal.

Does anyone know if you buy a Tivo HD from a closing store, does your 1 year warranty still get handled by a regular Circuit City store?

If you're talking about the manufacturer's warranty, that is handled directly by Tivo.
If you purchased an extended warranty through Circuit City, I am hearing that those will still be honored as they are handled through a third party.

It's 90 Days parts & Labor and 1 year parts TiVo will charge you $59 for a refurbished TiVo in that last 9 months.

Indeed - with such a weak warranty they can claim the refurb's have the same warranty as new - not mentioning how little that is! But it's still the best consumer video device I've owned.
