Question Turbonet Not Connecting?

OK, this is a question from an old newbie. I have a Series 1 standalone Tivo that I installed a Tivonet or Turbonet card to several years ago. It has worked fine and probably isn't the problem now. So, let me see if I can best explain this. Just bought a second/weekend home and decided to move the Tivo there. At my primary home, was using it on a home network on a Linksys router with a cellular air card as the internet connection (no DSL or cable in that area, we pipe in sunshine). Works fine there, I even set the cable lineup for the new house and downloaded the new guide data for it before I moved it. The second home has DSL which I got hooked up last night. I tried the Tivo plugged into a Linksys router running off the DSL modem and could not connect. I connected the Tivo directly to the DSL modem and was able to make a successful test call but, the daily call hangs up at connecting and eventually times out. Once last night I got to the "downloading" step but, that eventually failed and said it was interrupted. My laptop was able to surf the web like a champ connected to either the modem or the router. So, I'm curious if anyone else has experienced a similar situation and if there are any suggestions I can try. I must state right up front, I'm not versed in Unix, bash prompts, etc. When I installed the card several years ago, I used an automated setup disk someone had written, got it going and have never had to worry with it since so, I am not at all experienced with the card other than knowing it works. Thanks ahead for any help.

The turbocard may have shifted during the move of the TiVo so open it and re-seat the turbonet card a couple of times. That will also remove oxidation on the terminals, if there is any. Also have you tried restarting the TiVo while you have been experiencing your difficulties? Is your DSL connection working satisfactory during your PC Internet sessions?

I can't help you with DSL and I doubt very much that you have a Linux issue that would require software. The Series 1 has all the coding needed to use the turbonet card.

Yes, I restarted the Tivo several times by pulling the power cord. Haven't tried reseating the card, will try that tonight. The DSL has worked fine with the computer. What ports does the Tivo use to get the guide data? Anything other than port 80?

OK, a followup. The card is seated properly. I am able to use Windows ICS on a laptop, a switch and my cell phone as a modem and the guide data will download. But, if I connect the Tivo to my DSL modem or my Linksys router, it will not connect (yes, I restart the Tivo so it will pick up an IP). Obviously there is something in the settings of my DSL modem or something the ISP is doing that is blocking me. Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

Had an on-site service call from my ISP today. They asked me what ports does the Turbonet communicate on. I assume it uses port 80, right? Can anyone tell me for certain what ports are used? The tech told me that they are not blocking any ports.

TEST CALL and GUIDED SETUP/DAILY CALL differences...

@rrp13,

Information that may be a little late for you but here goes....

Had similar occurrences end of last week whereby a TEST CALL succeeded and DAILY CALL and GUIDED SETUP would hang and finally indicate CALL INTERRUPTED.

To track down my situation I activated a Data Capture/Communication Port Monitoring application with the following results:

*** TEST CALLS ***
All communications occur via the same URL/IP address and Port.
x.x.x.2 Port 80

*** GUIDED SETUP and DAILY CALLS ***
Totally different in that they start with the same URL/IP address and Port as the Test Call, then progressively change.
x.x.x.2 Port 80
x.x.x.7 Port 80
x.x.x.8 Port 80
x.x.x.84 Port 8080 (Bulk of Guide information)
x.x.x.27 Port 8080

Once I saw the Port 8080 communications request/hang I double checked my firewall settings and found they were not allowed. That is another story for a totally different appliance regarding how the firewall got changed.

*** MORAL TO THE STORY ***
Too many things are happening out of sight for us to simply say 'The Test Call works, I do not understand why the GS/DC will not.'
