Blockbuster Online now has Downloads...sort of

I went to my Blockbuster Online account and first saw they have a new site layout. Then I saw a button for a beta version of Downloads! I was pretty excited, since Netflix has had this for awhile now.

First, Downloads doesn't like my Firefox browser. It suggests I either use IE or download an IE cloning plugin. I download the plugin, but the doesn't seem to help. I even add blockbuster's website to the plugin's rules, but that doesn't help.

Not a good start.

Then I notice what Downloads REALLY means. If you want to rent a download, you have to pay 1.99 or 2.99 per movie...what? I double checked to see if that was just for non Blockbuster Online members, but the fine print just says everyone pays. It even points to movies on my queue that can be downloaded now (for a price).

What's more, the download can only be watched with their MovieLink software. I can't download it to my TiVo and watch it there, like I can with Amazon Unbox.

If Netflix is including downloads in the subscription, why on earth would Blockbuster think they can get away with charging for downloads??? What is their business model that suggests this can be successful? I am on the verge of bolting.

The NetFlix video player for Windows also requires Internet Explorer for the DRM.

Luckily I have the Roku player which has been great. No need to worry about DRM or computer issues with that.

I agree, I would not find the 2$ price tag per download an added bonus feature but just a PPV bolt on.

Stickng with Netflix and more glad each time I have.

I've flown the coop. I canceled my Blockbuster subscription and signed on with Netflix. I've already used the online streaming to let my kids watch some kids shows while I cleaned. It certainly doesn't have a big streaming selection, but it's better than nothing.

Staying with Netflix so far too. I've actually done comparisons with my queue and there have been movies that Blockbuster does not carry that are actively in my queue awaiting shipment from Netflix. The only tempting thing about Blockbuster Online is that there is a local store up the street that participates so I could rent 5 movies a month immediately by exchanging them. I would only take advantage of it on the weekends and with a limit of 5 I couldn't do it every weekend but its oh so tempting.
