I went to my Blockbuster Online account and first saw they have a new site layout. Then I saw a button for a beta version of Downloads! I was pretty excited, since Netflix has had this for awhile now.
First, Downloads doesn't like my Firefox browser. It suggests I either use IE or download an IE cloning plugin. I download the plugin, but the doesn't seem to help. I even add blockbuster's website to the plugin's rules, but that doesn't help.
Not a good start.
Then I notice what Downloads REALLY means. If you want to rent a download, you have to pay 1.99 or 2.99 per movie...what? I double checked to see if that was just for non Blockbuster Online members, but the fine print just says everyone pays. It even points to movies on my queue that can be downloaded now (for a price).
What's more, the download can only be watched with their MovieLink software. I can't download it to my TiVo and watch it there, like I can with Amazon Unbox.
If Netflix is including downloads in the subscription, why on earth would Blockbuster think they can get away with charging for downloads??? What is their business model that suggests this can be successful? I am on the verge of bolting.
