What can I do with Series 3?
Greetings all. I am relocating and will be going with existing satellite in the new house. Since I can't use it as a tuner with satellite, I'd like some feedback on how to put my Series 3 to use in ways other than typical tuner/dvr/network device - what is possible and what have you all done with them in this situation? I'm not techie enough to do any of my own coding/tweaks/hacks/etc. on it. Thanks.

You could use to record OTA signals (assuming you can get them in your new location) and thus as backup/extra storage for your satellite setup.
Otherwise it's pretty much a doorstop.

You could get an S2 to record satellite off of and use the S3 for MRV (multi-room viewing).

I'm assuming you have a lifetime subscription. If not, you're probably better off selling it.
The Series 3 is very useful as an MP3 player and photo viewer, It will get the content for both from a local PC. We do this all the time.
I suspect the Unbox features will still work - it's not dependent on a cable provider. You can watch YouTube videos. You can download content like CNet, New York Times, and other such video. You can get the Yahoo traffic reports. You can get the details on movies playing in your local theaters.
Besides OTA signals (which satellite does charge extra for and which would take up disk space for recordings on your satellite DVR), it's still far from being a doorstop.

HD home video library and player
Okay, I've got a great application for it! I'm going to set it up as a library and player for my HD home videos. I have an HD (1400x720) camcorder but have no way to view the content in full HD (other than HDMI cable direct from the cam to the TV). I'll network the S3 to my PC and render my home video projects to the format S3 likes, save them to S3 via Tivo Desktop, then have them all listed there on my Now Playing list for viewing on the big screen. Do I need a subscription for networking and Tivo Desktop features to function?

without a SUB you are then truly in doorstop mode. All you can do is play shows already on the drive but any recording or networking functionality is turned off, save for the 30 minute live TV buffer.

Thats what I'm going to do with my old S2 dual tuner. I'll take it to our vacation home and just use the dual tuner 30 min buffer.

I have DirecTV and also have a Series 3 TiVo.
It gets as full as the two DirecTV HD DVR's just recording HD off antenna, even with the bigger hard drive upgrade (see sig).
DirecTV doesn't offer CW HD in my area, so OTA is my only option for the couple of CW programs I watch.
OTA HD is also much better quality than the MPEG4 from DirecTV.
I also use it to watch programs I've gotten from "other internet sources".
