h.264/youtube/hd movie downloads

any news on when that update is coming? i really want to download movies in hd and get all of the youtube access and anything else that comes with it. i thought when it was announced they said this summer. it's july now and i don't think i've heard anything new.

I just did a search recently for new news on this topic as I'm looking forward to the youtube access not to mention mp4's.

It doesn't appear to be any updated information, a search of the net and all the common news sources for TiVo only yield the press release back in March.

My guess is though, maybe this summer there might be a update form TiVo. But who knows, we might not know until the day it's out.

You can do all of this now with PyTivo. Head over to the HME section for help with it.

The online YouTube access is comming from Tivo. MP4/h.264 video is not any time soon which means no direct HD downloads either. Must be transcoded off box first.

Yeah, or if you want to use tivo desktop, you can go to http://www.techcrunch.com/get-youtube-movie/ , download the flv, then download a conversion tool to convert the flv file to mpeg. That's what I have been doing.

As for the mp4/h.264 video, it is speculated that will come at the same time to TiVo as YouTube access, as YouTubes Application Access, such as for the iPhone provides mp4s and it is expected it will to the TiVo as well and that is why this update is only coming to the s3 and THD, as these are the only two systems with the proper hardware support. Nothing has been confirmed about mp4/h.264 updates at this time, but its a pretty safe but to guess that It may be coming with this update And if not for youtube support, TiVo will have to role mp4 support by Q1 2009 as some cable systems will start deploying mp4 in test markets, then expand further through out the year.

I think you are confused. pyTiVo converts videos to MPEG-2. What we are talking about is TiVo enabling native support of MPEG-4/H.264. Once this happens, pyTiVo nor TiVo Dekstop has to do any transcoding on this type of content.

Also, YouTube uses H.264 for it's content that TiVo will be getting (if they use the same method as Apple TV). So there's no other way for them to implement YouTube on TiVo without enabling this feature (native support of these formats) AFAIK.
