Series 2 Periodic crashes & Reboots. (tmk assertion failure, canaryTriggered)

I've got an unmodified Series 2, Humax DRT-800, running 9.3-01-2 that is periodically crashing and rebooting. The problem started earlier this year (I think around February). The frequency of the problem has been increasing. Most of the time the tivo will reboot and come back. Occasionally it will get stuck when booting on the please wait (orange background). This tivo doesn't appear to be showing any other symptoms other than crashing/rebooting.

I pulled the drive assuming it was going, however I found no errors logged for the drive via SMART. I was able to read scan the entire surface several times without errors as well as run the smart tests.

I took a look at the logs, it looks like an assertion failure is triggering a crash dump and a reboot. I found the following error in /var/log/kernel:

May 11 16:46:26 (none) kernel: WARNING LockUpdate took > 1.5 secs
May 11 19:20:29 (none) kernel: TickKiller will kill the TCD in 6000 ticks
May 11 19:20:29 (none) kernel: assert: Tmk Assertion Failure:
May 11 19:20:29 (none) kernel: assert: CanaryTriggered, line 75 ()
May 11 19:20:29 (none) kernel: assert: Signalling everybody to dump a backtrace!
May 11 19:20:29 (none) kernel: assert: kernel CRASHALLASSRT will trigger reboot
May 11 19:20:29 (none) kernel: bt_all_thread_requested 0x482746fd
May 11 19:20:29 (none) kernel: tcd 1
May 11 19:20:29 (none) kernel: hpk Gen04
May 11 19:20:29 (none) kernel: build b-9-3-mr @294972 2008.03.24-1221 release-mips []
May 11 19:20:29 (none) kernel: pack 9.3-01-2

Has anyone else been experiencing this problem? I tried searching for the assert error, CanaryTriggered in particular, but I didn't turn up anything. TickKiller didn't turn up anything either.

Any ideas on how to solve it?

Thanks,

Same Periodic Crash Problem with 540040 TiVo

Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm getting the same periodic crashes as well as the same log error messages on my TiVo 540040 (Series 2.5).

Of note, the crashes all seem to happen either 21 minutes or 51 minutes after the hour! But not every hour! I've gone back in the log files for months and it's a clear pattern. Weird.

Anyone who could shed some light on this would be appreciated very much.

Still crashes, just not as often....

Sorry, no, I never tracked this down. The particular tivo belongs to a relative. It still crashes occasionally. The frequency went down quite a bit after I replaced the original 80 gb drive with a 400 gb segate db35.3. I had done lots of surface scans of both the original drive and the replacement drive & checked the smart stats, nothing indicating any errors.

It Seems to come in batches and then go away for a while. She's been getting by with it. I've wondered if there is possibly some corruption in the database.
I never tried ditching everything and starting over from guided setup.
