No More S3?

Is it true that the S3 is gone forever?

I really love my S3. Finally hooked it up to my home theatre system after my move, and wow, I can't believe I had regular audio for almost two years when I could have enjoyed Dolby Digital audio. What was I thinking?

Here's hoping that whatever is replacing the S3 will be just as good.

The TiVoHD "replaces" the S3 for now.

And the TiVo HD has full DD audio as well, sans the THX certification though.

Yeah, but it says on the diagnostics "Platform: Series 3".

I still like the S3 better, I hate not knowing what the TiVo HD is recording without having to turn the TV on. And the S3 is more attractive to the eye.

Definitely a nice feature. I hope they'll offer another higher end model with the nicer front panel in the future. Hopefully I'll be good with my S3 for some time to come.

The TiVo HD is a great unit, but it's kind of like meeting the girl with the great personality and you have to get pass her looks. Intitially you're not attracted but once you get to know her you can see beyond that.

The S3 you can have in your living room, looking good and everything. However I would like to see a color change. If they come up with the S4 I think silver is better.

Why? Dust of course! it's more apparent on black.

I picked up a used, second s3 cuz money is an issue. I figure the S4's will be on the pricey side & I the old S2 looks less than great on the new hd teetv.

I don't care what the S4 looks like. If it does all the things a cable provide box can do (on demand, ppv, sdv, etc), then I don't care if it looks like an atari 2600.

I bet some would pay extra for that look.

Can we program season passes into our 2600-styled S4's using toggle switches? Or would it be with the single-button 8-way joystick?

I'll settle for faux wood on the sides.

i've been a little afraid of used S3s because of the chronic freezing problems so many of them have. almost got another one on ebay then backed off because of it.

I like a lot of space so I wanted the bigger native HD . I was worried too but I figured I'd upgrade the HD if there was a problem. If the internal HD was ok then I'd add an external if not then bigger internal was in my future.

I just didn't like the Tivo HD restriction to only the mydvd, no glow remote plus not knowing what it is recording would drive me nuts.

The update of 9.4 solved alot of those issues. You can also buy refurbished ones on the tivo website for a fair price with a one year warranty. More than enough time to see if yours would have freezing issues still which would indicate either a failed hard drive or a whole new era of glitches and errors.

I'd personally rather have an S3 refurb at $362 over a new HD at $299..

Whoopie.

Unless they come up with a vastly greater set of features than that, I won't be buying one.

The THD is a Series III class machine. Basically, this means it supports CableCards, has a built-in Ethernet port, and h.264 decoders.

Since I can't see either of my S3s when in use, I definitely would have given up this feature for $100 savings. Since the THD is in a room where I rarely sit, it's facade is also of little or no concern to me. There also might come a time when I (or maybe you) will wish to take advantage of the THDs support for much greater drive capacity than the S3. I also like having the CableCard slots in front, although that's certainly not a deal-breaker by any means. I don't think there's much argument the S3 remote is superior, though, except when it comes to battery life. It's also nice the S3 does not require a 5v adapter in order to install a serial port. Of course, the S1 and S2 had the serial port built in to the case. The greater speed of the S3 is also a consideration in the Theater. 'Not so much in the living room or guest room.

Then you'll have to edit your Custom User Title since you'll have more than 2 TiVos.
