Got a HD TV last fall and have been considering what to do for network HD content. Currently have DirecTV TiVos. Considered switching to DirecTV HD DVR or to Insight Cable w/ TiVo HD. Decide to try the Insight / TiVO HD first, since we really like the TiVo interface we will also take the opportunity to switch from DSL to Cable Modem.
Currently there are less HD channels on Insight then DirecTV, but after doing a side by side comparison of channels, given what we watch currently, most of the additional DirecTV HD channels were not ones we watch much, if at all.
The Series 3 HD 2 CableCard install went w/o a problem for us (Delaware Ohio Insight Cable location, Matt did a great job). Worked first try, paired up, and channels were all there. With the TiVo HD CableCard combo, on-demand and PPV are not possible w/ Ingishts set up. Again, not an issue for us with iTunes and Amazon content available for download PPV. I did have one snag to figure out though.
At first the analog and digital Insight channels seemed a lot more fuzzy / pixalated when compared to DirecTV. I did an input comparison in real time of both feeds on the same channels, clealry Insight was not as sharp. What I then figured out was the TiVo Video settings that worked best with my HD TV (Sony Bravia LCD) was the ones that did not force 480p. I set the TiVo Series 3 HD to “Native” and the side by side comparison is now the same quality.
TiVo is running 9.3a-01-2-648. CableCards were version Moto 04.21
