Looking for hr10-250

I am looking to buy an hr10-250 strictly for the OTA Tuner.

I may be dropping both Dish and D* To save money. I need a device that can record HD OTA.
I figure someone here may have one that will be useless for D* Very soon and I dont want to deal with Ebay. Pm If you have one That you might feel you will be stuck with when The 100% Mpeg 4 hits. Pretty much all I want out of tv is New simpsons and family guy(which I can get via my local fox). But I need to record It Dvr style. I don't need it technically until next season starts. And I dont want to pay allot for some thing just to record 2 shows.

Got a PC? You might want to look at building an HTPC using Windows Media Center or Vista Home Premium.

You are probably already aware that without a DirecTV subscription and satellite dish/program guide, the HR10-250 DVR functionality is mostly disabled.

You can watch OTA but not record (unless you discover a hack not mentioned on any message board that I've seen - it's possible...just learn some mips assembly )

I have an Hr10-250 & I cancelled DrecTV & bought two TIVO HD on Comcast. However my Hr10-250 is still hooked up to the direcTV dish & over the air antenna. I get the guide for all channels including over the air. I can only use the dual tuner for watching, pause live over the air TV, 30 minute buffer on each, and only receive (watch) digital over the air stations. It will NOT record, do season pass, search, etc. I have many concerts and a few movies I like and all that still plays on the "now playing list". So still can get some benefit being able to watch stuff I recorded on direcTV when I was a customer.

Not without a DTV sub. You can just view/pause live programming

You can build one without either OS. I use plain old XP Pro and it works great for me. MCE has too many limitations and you couldn't make me take Vista if you paid me. Just get yourself one or more ATSC tuners and install them in your PC. There are freeware PVR software programs available and there are no monthly fees for the guide data. You can also buy one of several commercial PVR apps, like SageTV or BeyondTV, that will turn your PC into a Tivo on steroids.

Or you could get an HDHomeRun and watch it on any computer on your network that will run VLC player... the weather has been so nice lately that I've taken to bringing the laptop outside and watching baseball over the wireless while I grill.

Very true on the alternatives though I think you're not giving MCE or Vista enough credit. MCE works pretty well and is completely free once you've installed it. It also works incredibly well if you have an Xbox 360 to use as an extender, or even in streaming content to a Playstation 3. Vista Home Premium (or Vista Ultimate), in 32 bit version at least, works very well also. Once configured it just works. I've been using it for quite a while and love having it available as a backup to my other DVRs (which I never really have to worry about either as my HR20 and HR21 box function just fine) and use it (the Vista Ultimate 32 bit box) to watch most of the live network TV programming that I watch (which is still a majority of the programming I watch in any given week).

MCE or the MCE components in Vista Home Premium still gives me trick play features, a nice large buffer to move around in, and dual tuner support as well. One nice advantage with MCE is that there's no charge at all for guide data, but then there's the trade off in how much you paid/pay for the operating system to begin with.


I've used Snapstream's BeyondTV product and like it a lot and also give them credit for not charging for guide data. The cost of the software isn't that much, but then you need a Windows based box (XP or Vista) to run the software on and still need a tuner card to use with it (same as MCE).


Sage or Myth TV are nice but guide data is a small added expense. There's also the issue of having to familiarize yourself with a Linux OS if you go that route.


Anyway, the point of the original suggestion is that for a relatively low cost (approx. $500 or less for everything that would be needed) you can build a nice HTPC and then use it as your DVR without having to pay any additional fees to receive any over-the-air programming (assuming you are close enough to get the signals). You'd have to add cable or FiOS monthly costs if you want programming from either of those sources

Frankly I'd go with the Tivo HD which I think is $199 now and you'll be able to actually DVR the OTA programs. Also if your financial situation gets better you could get a cheap cable package and the Tivo HD will record that as well.

If you just want a digital tuner, Echostar is actually coming out with a digital tuner for $40 and you can use your government coupon to offset the cost. Satguys and DBSTalk have more info. In fact they were taking signups for the field test but I think it's filled up already.

Don't know where you saw a Tivo HD for $199. The cheapest place I've seen is $249.99 at Newegg.com

I love it when you can solve your own issue. For 18.00 per month My dish dvr will record all my Local OTA With Rabbit Ears I am able to pick up 40 local digital which look good. And I am 100% positive with a good HD antenna I can get All my local HD. Right now I am getting My local Fox affiliate On OTA and It is HD.! With Rabbit ears!!

No apology necessary... I was hoping you had a link to the $199 deal, as I'm considering dumping Directv and just going to OTA recording of programming using a Tivo HD with a Tivo subscription.

My wife wouldn't be too happy about losing ESPN (she's the sports nut in our family). I'm getting tired of paying so much for something I use so little. 99% of my season passes are on local channels I could get OTA.

Just to set the record straight - that was no mistake. I don't go quoting prices, etc if I hadn't seen them. There was a Tivo offer via the NEA that was discussed in the coffee house forum. I followed the links all the way through to the Tivo web site. It appeared to me that anyone could get that offer for $199 that ends today.

Also, I saw another discussion in this community forum that mentioned Tivo was selling recons for $199.
