Is motherboard dead? sony 2000

Hello,
I have a Sony svr-2000. I got his unit used and was told all it needed was a new power supply. I replaced the power supply and it still does not work. There is no sound coming out and all I get on the tv screen is flickering square blocks. The green light on the front of the unit keeps on flickering. When I plug it in the hard drive does not spin and the fan does not spin.If I dissconnect the hard drive ribbon cable from the motherboard, I can hear the hard drive spin(fan still does not spin). If I dissconnect the power supply to the motherboard but still have the power going to the hard drive (ribbon cable still disconnected) the hard drive does not spin. I have searched this web site and the internet and mostly of the answers were replace the power supply and/or hard drive. Also there was a suggestion of a power ground problem. I have both the tv and the tivo on the same outlet. Could there be a faulty ground inside the unit? Any suggestion would be helpful. thanks
mike

what kind of evaluation did the person who sold/gave this to you make to determine that the power supply was the problem?

The person told me that he took it to a local electronics repair shop and that is what they told him. I don't know what kind of tests thay did.

To be honest, it sounds like you were had. If you're interested in spending the money to have it fixed, I'd check out http://ccscorporation.net/. They do good work.

Thanks Flatcurve,
I think the unit is toast. I don't want to put any more money into it($50 so far) and without lifetime service it wouldn't be economical. I was just looking for one to use like a vcr or one with tivo basic. I might just sell the hard drive and power supplies to try to recoup my money. Thanks
