MRV Multi Room Viewing using Two TIVO HD

Have a TIVO HD in backroom. Connects wirelessly to NetgearWGR614v5 Router via TIVO USB G adapter. I remember in setup, router is set to G only.

The other TIVO HD, is connected wired upstairs.

The TIVO HD in the backroom is the one with most of the content.

In trying to watch anything upstairs from the downstairs unit it takes forever to start watching anything. Of course, and escpecially HD stuff that I record.

I know that TIVO HD is slower that S3, and it has been discussed over and over, and I have read. But, besides tuning to an off station etc, which helps on TIVO TO GO, what can one do, to watch a show immediately. Should I record everything in a lower quailty or change something in my network?

I'd try putting the Tivo HD in the backroom on a wire. I don't trust wireless anything.

Aye, the only way you'll get any speed increase in this scenario is with a wired connection. However, don't expect miracles.

I know this isn't the most helpful suggestion in the world, but I never plan on watching what I transfer that night. When I start a transfer or three, they're for me to watch the following night.

Recording everything in a lower quality is only a half workaround at best since it won't apply to anything in HD. Other than trying a fully wired solution, even though I believe 802.11G is fast enough, you'll need to start transfers well before you intend to watch them.

I am a big TIVO supporter, and its too bad that their MRV does not work in realtime. With TIVO being the top of the heap, you would think they would get it right.

Might try a full wired setup to see if that will help. JUst remembered I have a Replaytv that I can take off the network, that sits in the same spot.

With 2 S3s and wired connection, I am able to watch HD shows in realtime - actually most HD shows transfer a little faster than realtime

Well that is S3's, which were/are a little more expensive. They must have done something to make TIVO HD, cheap enough that it didnt work correctly. Watch them come out with TIVO HD V2 that is faster than both S3's and TIVO HD.

I did setup the wired connection for both, and will test it out tonight after picking up grandson at baseball practice.

I have a S2 with Wireless B and the new TivoHD with wireless G. I am positive I was getting faster transfers on my S2 from my PC. Shows were transferring faster then real time on the S2, now with the TivoHD shows transfer from the PC slower, resulting in those pauses while viewing the show. That is very confusing, as the S2 Wireless B adapter shouldn't transfer files faster then a brand new made for Tivo Wireless G adapter.

MRV works just fine in realtime for SD shows over a wireless network, as long as you have an 802.11g setup. If you only have an 802.11b wireless network then you're not going to get realtime transfers - it will take 2 or 3 hours to transfer a 1 hour show.

That's about the performance ratio you will get for HD shows over 802.11g

I have a couple of TivoHD units with the TiVo wireless adapters - one of the reasons I upgraded my home wireless network to 802.11g was to get the improved MRV transfer speed.
