Switching between Live TV and recorded programming?
Hi. When I had my cable company's (crappy) DVR service, they had one feature I really liked: the ability to switch between the pre-recorded program I was watching and live TV with one button. I tried it with TiVo tonight. I was watching The Soup, that had been recorded earlier, and hit Live TV. The TV, of course, switched to live TV. When I pressed Live TV again, it switched to the other Live TV tuner, and back and forth. It never switches back to the pre-recorded program.
This feature really comes in handy if, say, you're watching live TV and a commercial comes on. Then you can click and switch right to recorded programming while the commercial plays on live TV. So you always have something to watch while a commercial is on.
Am I missing the feature? Surely the cable company has nothing on TiVo, right?

Press left arrow. It will take you resume playing on what you were watching, so you then just press select (or play or right arrow).

The 'Live TV' button only goes to live TV. Hmmm.

Thanks for your sarcasm. Very helpful. FYI, my cable company's DVR used its Live TV button equivalent to switch between Live TV and recorded shows. There was a separate button to switch between tuners. Crazy that I might expect the same from a similar product, right?
Anyway, swkenney, so when I'm watching Live TV, I press the left arrow to return to my recorded program?

Why can't people do anything themselves anymore?
do you have a Tivo?
start watching a recorded program
press "live TV"
press left arrow
What happened?

Left arrow from live TV goes back to the last menu item you were in.
If you were watching a recorded item it goes back there.
Another place it is useful is if you make a change to Channel List (or Channels You Receive) then press Live TV. Tune to a channel to check it out and then press left arrow to go back and add or delete a channel.
I had a Comcast box, and was surprised when the Last button returned me from live TV to the recording I had been watching.
I also had Dish. It would usually not remember where you left off in the list of recordings, but would go back to the top of the list.
In Tivo you press back arrow to "stop" a recording. In Comcast you press stop. So the button to press for doing what you want is not always obvious. Some people should check out what acomplaintfreeworld.org is about.

What is this live TV you speak of?
Not thread crapping or trolling, but why not just record that show you are watching live? Clearly you have the tuner open for it, hence being able to watch it, so record it, finish up the recording you are watching then watch that newly recorded show and skip through all the commercials.

I didn't have access to my TiVo at the time of my response.
And why don't I just record a show? Because I want to watch it now, not later.

That's a bit contradictory. You want to watch it now, not later, yet you want to watch something else during when it is live?

Wow! You learn something new everyday. I wasn't really even looking for this capability. I always thought I had to go back to now playing, but this is great. I just tried it and it's going to save me a few clicks in the future!
As for why someone wants to do it, just leave it alone. While we all love Tivo, we still live in a free society and we can use our Tivos any ding-dong way we like.

Lazlo: No, you misunderstood. I want to watch the Live program now. But I obviously don't want to watch the commercials. So during the commercial breaks, I want to switch to a recorded program.

I am sorry, you must watch your TiVo the way I tell you to. If you do not then you must forfeit your TiVo to me.

Try watching live TV this way. Tune the channel you want and then hit freeze. Wait about 15 minutes and then hit play to start watching 15 minutes delayed. Then, when a commercial comes on you skip past it. This way you don't lose the thread of a show watching something else during commercial breaks.
you'll be back to realtime by the end of the show.
