when i go into my account, it shows that i can get the hd extra pack for free for 3 months as well. I have a hr10. are these channels (HDNet Movies, MGM HD, MHD, Smithsonian Channel HD, Universal HD) mpg2 or mpg4, and are they worth the hassel of canceling the service in 3 months?

HDNM and UHD are defiinitey both MPEG2. I think the others are MPEG4. Certainly NOT worth $5 a month, but I'll take three free!

I signed up too.

Only some of those are MPEG2 - HDNet Movies, Universal HD and (I think) MHD, MGM and Smithsonian are MPEG4. Unless you're a big fan of HDnet Movies, I don't see the point.

I wonder if this starts the clock over again on any commitments that you currently have in place on your account?

Nope - I'm not under a commitment and nothing's been added. In fact, I'm about to call them for another matter (returned DVR being charged!) and I'm going to ask the question just to be sure.

I think I'm going to add everything tonight and then call and get the AAA discount added on too. Worst case is that I renew my commitment for 1 year which I was going to do anyway when I add the AAA discount.

Free stuff. Groovy...

Good move.

Well, they're claiming that two weeks after returning an HR20, it hasn't been received at the warehouse and the charge will stay. The number I asked my wife to get off the package before it was shipped is NOT the tracking number, so I now have no proof that it was sent. Fedex say they can't track it without the tracking number and D* haven't got it either!

It's deja vu all over again!

They don't charge you for the first 30 days so if you add it, it will always show $0 at first.

It somehow got added to my account 2-4-08, and by 2-19-08 (billing statement), they had a prorated charge of $1.05. Called and canceled and they credited my account the $1.05.

Do you have that screenshot? I can't get to anything now as the website says I'm past due on a payment I don't owe, so it's blocking all that!

Guess I didnt notice I was being charged for the plan after I accepted it. I called DTV today and they kept transferring me to someone else and no one knew about the offer.

I kept telling them I could email them a screenshot I have of the transaction and they told me that a screenshot wouldnt prove anything. I refused to get off the line until it was resolved and ended up getting 6 months of showtime for free. That covers the 5.99 a month so we're even now. I'll just cancel the protection plan if I want later.
