Netflix Streaming in 4:3

I have been using the Netflix Streaming for a couple of weeks now. The quality seems good but it always looks strange on a SD (4:3) TV. The picture is all squeesed to fit the screen. Everything looks taller and thiner than it should. Does anyones know if there is a setting on the Tivo HD or at Netflix that I can set to play in 4:3 format?

I was wondering the same thing. I noticed that older 4:3 movies look just fine.

I watched an older movie over the weekend and it still didn't look correct. Look like it was set to play on a widescreen TV.

Try the "Aspect" button... usually you want "Panel". However, you can't change the setting while actually in the Netflix player; you have to do it in LiveTV or while playing back something from the NPL.

I was watching "Hancock" last night, and noticed that they were presenting a widescreen aspect in a 4:3 image. Everything was squashed.

Nothing else was doing that, though....

I have an HDTV and have trouble watching Netflix on TiVo. It stretches the picture to fill the screen no matter the source aspect ratio is (i.e. no black bars on top or sides). Certain movies and TV shows look fine as they are in their natural aspect ratio, but for anything else it's unwatchable; I stick to my Roku instead.

I have noticied the "squished" behavior with some stuff on Netflix. I set my TV aspect to 4:3 (panel) and it looks swell. TiVo aspect is worthless for Netflix so I set the aspect on the TV.

Those are anamorphic DVD transfers. (You'll see the same thing in most DVDs these days.) They're meant to be either stretched to take up the entire panel on a widescreen TV, or squished down in an old-fashioned set.

Play around with the aspect buttons on your TV until you find the correct setting for watching.
