Buying new Series 3 - need advice
Hi all!
I have regular cable service - analog - not digital. I need no cable boxes. I presently own 2 series 2 tivo's both with lifetime - one is single tuner - other is dual tuner. Im buying a new tivo for my 3rd bedroom and I have a decision to make.
Do I buy another series 2 dual tunner, or a series 3 dual tunner that will work in the future should I choose to upgrade to digital cable? Not sure what to do here. Advice?
Anthony

All depends on your timeline for upgrade to HD and an HDTV. The S3 is not worth the money for SD. If you are looking at upgrading a couple of years from now, I would buy another S2. Who knows what Tivo HD boxes will be available in 2 years. A quad tuner possibly

If you're not going to upgrade to digital cable for a while, AND your cable provider is not planning to go all-digital for the foreseeable future, you may want to consider going with the Series 2 offer which you actually earn back the purchase price plus an additional $20 after mail in rebate. Go to the TiVo Community store for further details.
However, I would NOT put Lifetime on such a box. $399 is way too much money for a box whose usefulness will become limited in the future without the hassles of attaching an external tuner box.
If you are considering another Lifetime box, I would strongly suggest a THD unit, and put one of the current S2's in the bedroom (possibly the DT, since the THD will also have two tuners).

Thanks - I have decided to go with a S3 HD unit for $299 and lifetime. This future proofs that new box for me should I go with digital cable next year. Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend anything that is SD only. We're 12 months from going to an HD nation and even if your TV is only SD chances are that you're going to pick up an HD TV in the future.

With the HD models you also have the atsc tuners for capturing over the air TV after analog is shut off. With an HD TV you can enjoy HD even without digital cable.

Why do you say we are 12 months from an HD nation?

even more accurately, we are 13 months from an over the air digital TV nation. for cable/sat subscribers, nothing changes.

If you're an analog cable subscriber, nothing changes...for now. But eventually, even analog cable will go away.
If you're already "digital" via digital cable or sat, then of course it's business as usual.

As I stated in another thread, there are a few people who have a need for a Series 2, basically those whose TV services aren't compatible with the S3/THD such as satellite, U-verse, or those whose cable systems aren't required to provide CableCards such as our friends in Canada.
Otherwise, the only time I'd recommend an S2 is for someone who needs an inexpensive, short term fix (old S2 died but it's on a subscription contract but don't have $300 for a THD), and only if it's cheap or free.

Yea I knew that. I doubt cable companies with force consumers into digital - there are SO many people who wont upgrade to digital even if its the only option.
I can only wish, hope and pray that direct tv will partner with tivo again - then I will be oh so very happy!

Cable companies are doing exactly that in many markets. I am pretty sure Comcast in the SFBA does its Basic tier via ADS.

The main thing that changes, it that more and more people are buying HDTV's and are demanding HD content and HDTV's are getting very inexpensive.
So 'nothing changes' isn't exactly true....
