HR20 - One show recording per day?

Just got my HR20 this week replacing my HR10...so far so good. Not too bad and getting used to some of the differences. However one thing that I notice happening(happened on the HR10 too I guess) is that when I record something like CSI:<pick your flavor> that shows multiple times per day on the same channel and different episodes, I notice that if it shows 5 times, it will record 5 times back to back to back. My question is if there is a way to tell it to only record one show per day. My goal is to not tie up my tuners in prime time. I typically like to keep on open so that I can watch Live TV<mortal sin isn't it?>. But I typically like to watch sports live or psuedo live with pauses in between.

Please advise if this is possible and how to handle.

AFAIK, the only ways to do this are to record first run shows only or set up a manual recording.

You can tell it to hold just the last 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 shows. Go to your series link (Season Pass), press Info, and set the number of recordings to hold.

There are dozens of other tricks in the Tips & Tricks.

So if I set to 1 or 2 shows then it will only record the "SET" number of shows per day? I was hoping it would record 1 per day for a total of SET number.

I have read through you tips and tricks and the survival guide. Great documents for the novice.

I am a member of CE over at DBTalk but I probably will only participate with my H20s as my HR20s is my main viewing box. The wife would KILL me if I ever had to blow away her shows.

Thanks.

Not sure the best way to get back to the series link. So I went into the Prioritizer and selected the planned recording. I see where to change the number of recordings. Is this what you are refering to? "telling it to HOLD the last 1,2,3,etc.."?

Thanks.

I have had this problem with sports shows on NFLN or ESPN so I set up a manual recurring recording for one of the time slots. It's the only thing that works since the networks don't flag these shows as first run, etc. Hope that helps.

I was playing around this morning and looked at the manual recording options I saw the recurring switch that would allow me to record the same thing every day at the same channel/time. I wish it had a filter though so I could limit to what the guide was showing...ie CSI only for this channel/time. That way if the carrier showed something else during this time slot, then it wouldn't record. I am not being too picky am I.

However, the problem I see with manuall recordings is that I can't keep only 5 shows. I would basically start filling up and have to manually clean up if I get behind in my viewing.

Oh well, I may just have to pick a method that offers the least amount of pain.

It's no different then a Tivo. If you tell it to record repeats and keep 5 it will record no matter what and keep only the last 5. You can put programs like that at the bottom of your priority so that prime time shows will record ahead of it and things like CSI on Spike will just record as "filler" as the tuners are available. If you really don't want it to record in prime time then you'll need to cancel the recordings in the ToDo list during the time slots you don't want it to record, just like a Tivo.

The Prioritizer on the HR20/21 works no different then the Season Pass manager on a Tivo in this respect.

I was hoping for some improvements here. Oh well..I have actually deleted some shows but that is pain. Had to do that with the wife's Monk. They have a marathon coming up and this would have removed all the "new" ones since the show doesn't have the New/Repeat flag set correctly.

So what if I do this...Lets say only keep 3 shows. If there are 5 shows on a given day, with the HR20 also record the remaining 2 shows removing the first 2 of the day?

Bingo!

This may be the approach I use for "The Daily Show" once it returns (new HR20 installed during hiatus). Or maybe I should just create 4 repeating manual recordings for the timeslot, M-Thursday. TDS is notorious for generic program descriptions coupled with 5 repeats a day of the same show, making targeting the ones you want a little difficult, either on Tivo or +DVR. Opinions?

I also haven't found an equivalent on the HR20 of the Tivo "28-day" rule, where something recorded in the last 28 days will not record again. This was a great feature of the elegant Tivo interface. As the engineers for the +DVR well know, imitation (or theft) is the sincerest form of flattery. Either I just haven't discovered it on the +DVR yet, or it's time to get to work, girls.

Most people with Tivo's also need to set manual recordings of TDS to get just one a day, HR20 will be no different. Comedy Central is really bad with guide data.

No "28 day rule" that I am aware of. Tivo kinda made that up to try to avoid recording extra reruns but it had a downside for some people if they actually wanted to record them. But overall I think the 28 day rule worked well for most people.

The HR20 is more like a standard DVR in that if the episode is still on the DVR then it won't record. So you won't get 2 copies of the same CSI episode, even if the first one was recorded 2 months ago. My wife records CSI off Spike and keeps all episodes. So she has between 50 and 75 on there at all times. It won't record one that's already on the DVR. I can't say if Tivo does the same thing or not, probably. But yea, no 28 day rule on the DVR+ platform (or any other that I know of).

I like the manual record idea as I could use the channel/time for Monday through Friday and record during the daytime. However, A&E's schedule is all over the place. No consistancy at all.
