What can (or can't) I do with my R10?

Hi,

I've done some searching around here, but I can't seem to find a clear answer.

There appears to be some cool stuff out there (Tivo Casts, programming your Tivo from the web, etc.) but it appears that my R10 can't do any of that. Am I correct in assuming that? Should I upgrade? If so, to what?

Basically what I would like is to be able to get TivoCasts (is that even available on DirecTv?) access my Tivo via the web or even just my computer and (without getting into a whole video extraction deal) save a video to DVD (if it is not illegal to do so). I don't have any Hi-Def equipment so that is not relevant at this time.

Any suggestions on what can/can't be done and where I can locate information about this?

Also, I used to have a Sony SAT-60 and I could search by Director, Actor, etc. That went away when that machine died. I thought it was part of what I paid for with Tivo, but was that part of the machine itself?

One friend suggested getting a TV Tunver card and just making my own PVR. I guess that is a no-no to discuss here, but can anyone suggest why I should or should not do that?

Thanks for the help.

The only thing you can do with an R10 is expand your capacity with a bigger hard drive.

Everything else requires hacking which can be done, but is very hard. Hacking the Tivo's requires re flashing the prom to allow an unsigned kernal to run. A prom is flashed by applying a certain voltage to it. The Tivo's motherboards all supply 3.3 volts and had proms that can be flahsed at 3.3 volts. With the R10 they replaced the 3.3 volt prom with one that can only be re programed with 12 volts. Since the motherboard can not supply 12 volts it has to be removed to be re flashed. The prom is very hard to un solder and replace, but if you are good enough there are people who have done it. Of course a small mistake and you have destroyed your R10.

You gotta have real Tivo service to get the features that you're asking about. The watered down version that DTV has will only get the basics of Tivo service.

There are some hacks that can be done to get MRV and that type of thing... but your box is not a good one for hacking. If you want all the extras that a DTV Tivo can do with hacking.... look for zipper on the underground forum. And get one of the boxes that are easier to hack. Examples are HDVR2 and DSR7000.

Thanks for the information.

But if I wanted to keep DTV and get a new Tivo box, which one should I get?

I do have FIOS TV in my area, am I better off switching to them? If so, is there a Tivo box that allows me to record two shows at the same time, like I currently can?

My in-laws have FIOS with its PVR, but I wasn't impressed.

Thanks again.

Any Series 2 will work with DirecTV.

For FIOS,, you might as well get a TiVo HD or Series 3, since you can tune two digital channels at once. FIOS has few analog channels, supposedly none in some places, which would shorten a Seres 2 DT to one tuner with the FIOS STB.
A Series 3/TiVo HD will not work with DirecTV at all.

A Series 2 will provide the networking features you want.

Wishlist search is part of the subscribed TiVo service, which you will need to subscibe to to make use of current models.
