help: Search for signal on basic cable in.

This problem occurs randomly. Everything is fine, and suddenly the TV signal is gone. And screen shows " search for signal on basic cable in". I unplug the cable and plug in but no work.

I also restart my Tivo (540080), but no help either.

I have a basic cable service from Time warner (channel 1 to 75). And have no idea what is happening. Anyone can help? I am thinking maybe the machine is kind of defective.

Also, it somehow turn off my TV by pressing the Tivo remote.

I would suggest, for diagnostic purposes, splitting the cable and running one feed directly to the TiVo and the other directly to the TV. This assumes that your TV is recent enough to have at least one separate input other than RF.

When this happens again, simply swap over to "live" TV. If you get a signal, it's the TiVo. If you don't, it's your cable provider.

You could also put the TiVo in standby. This will permit direct passthrough of the cable signal to the TV. I assume you have coax from the TiVo out to the TV in. If not, then you'd need to add it.

The problem with that is if the problem is in the TiVo, say a soldered connection on the RF in has broken, the OP still won't know if it's the TiVo or his cable provider.
