HDMI question - watch tv / listen to music

I am just about to set up a new Plasma and a Yamaha 1800 receiver which has 4 HDMI inputs. I will also add an Apple TV, DVD player and an S3. My wish is to use HDMI for sound and picture for ease of use. I was just wondering though if I will lose the ability to play music on my stereo while watching TV. Assume the music is coming from a Sonos digital music system which will be hooked up to an input on the Yamaha. Can I select input on the Yamaha which plays the tv but override the tv sound by selecting the Sonos input? I am hoping the answer is that the S3 has to have a separate TV input but I am believing that this may be the case. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

It really depends on the features of the receiver. I suggest that you look at the manual and see if your receiver has that ability.

Thanks. So it sounds like it is possible. Can you please describe what function on my receiver I am looking for as the manual is not very good.

Yes, it's certainly possible. My receiver (the Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSi) can do it.

In my manual, it's called "watching video and audio sources independently"
