Warning: BBC to castrate Torchwood!

http://www.syfyportal.com/news424500.html

[edit] On closer examination, it looks like they're going to be airing two versions of the show...the regular edition and another, kid-friendly version. And this is the BBC, not the BBCA reruns (which presumably will be a third version).

So the edited version will air a few days later. What's to prevent the kiddies from watching the first airing? We all know that time slot won't deter the kiddies.

It's the PG-Rated version of Saturday Night Fever all over again!

Or perhaps BBCA can go to airing the regular kid-friendly version, and it'll be handled better than it is now? Personally, I don't know, don't care -- I'm watching it uncensored on HDNet.

Yes, I suspect that what we're seeing is the BBC realizing that since they have to recut the show for American viewing, they might as well repurpose that recut for use in the UK.

I have no problem with this as long as the unedited version remains available.

I suspect the unedited version will always be available via DVD.

I'm no W fan by any stretch. But even that goober looking guy in office is much better looking than Burn.

Gareth?

At least they don't have "sexy" scenes of Gareth.

I am so sick of kid friendly. Parents, watch what your kids watch, don't censor the rest of us.

Hear, hear! I'm with you 100%. My mother monitored our TV watching very strictly when we were growing up. We had one tv, it was in the living room, and whatever parent was home knew exactly what we were watching at all times.

This is the reason I was never allowed to watch Miami Vice. Parental Supervision. What a concept.

I wouldn't be so sure. Expecting parents to monitor and control their own children's viewing habits, instead of depriving all viewers of more mature programming, is not a perspective that is limited to the childless. Indeed, some find the abrogating of responsibility by parents to monitor and control what their children watch to be a far bigger problem than the aforementioned censorship ever addresses.

I don't know that the editing of Torchwood is changing that. They are going to have 2 versions air in the UK on the BBC. One is for those who don't want it pared down, and the other allows it to be accessible to more people (not just children). Now, whether or not BBC America shows the edited version or the unedited version is a different story. Since BBCA doesn't show nudity, we may be more likely to get the sanitized for children version than just an edited version without nudity (and some of the bad words), just so they don't have to make yet another edition.

And this is why I download it from Britain. No worries.

I kind of doubt that kids would be very interested in this show anyway. It's got more angst than aliens.

I have no kids but I don't think that allows people to censor my programming.

For squemish adults, I suggest not watching BBCA at all.

I'd love to be able to get a couple other things this way. Top Gear, in particular. Can you share the secret of how you do this. Feel free to IM if the method is of questionable legality.

Some people who have children think that since they have children, they have the right to decide what the rest of us can watch.

And they seem literally not to understand how anybody could object to that.

I still don't see why all the hullabaloo over this. It's an additional, weekly episode to be shown in addition to the original episode.

Maybe. Or maybe the very existence of a censored version puts the pressure on to make it so that it doesn't need so much censoring in the first place, so the censored version doesn't come out feeling hacked up. "Interesting" bits get consigned to meaningless segments that don't advance the story, instead of being integrated with it.

And it also puts pressure on viewers to "acquire" the correct version!
