Is it possible to buy a used tivo with a lifetime subscription?
I'm a tivo n00b, and its obvious the lifetime subscription was the way to go.
now I see used tivos for sale, ebay, craigslist, etc.... they say they come with a lifetime subscription.
is it possible to buy these tivos and take over the lifetime subscription and then buy a new tivo and transfer the lifetime subscription to this new tivo?
thanks.
BostonEric.

It's possible to get a lifetimed Tivo, and have that lifetime status transferred to you, but you have to be VERY careful about finding legitimate deals.
That's what has kept me from buying Tivos on Ebay.
As far as transferring the lifetime sub to another Tivo -- If you happen to get one where the lifetime sub was activated prior to October of '03, you might get lucky.
Last I heard, there was a deal to transfer said sub to a Tivo HD.

The short answer is 'NO'.
The lifetime subscription is for the box, not the person.

Mostly, the Lifetime is locked to the box.
It can be transferred under the following circumstances:
It is a Series 1 that was Lifetime subbed before Jan21,2000. Can be transferred to any TiVo, once.
It is a failed unit being replaced under a warranty or other repair situation. They will supply a replacement unit, unless they specifically agree to you going out to buy a retail unit.
It is under a promotion, such as the one going on now that applies to Lifetimes activated on or before October 2003, to a TiVoHD or Series 3.

Bummer... Mine was Feb 17, 2000. And I don't use cable, so the new promo is useless to me.
My hard disk died, and I'm waiting for a decent promo to move to a new box.
So sad...
Craig.

If the HDD died, just replace it, or sell it and use the proceeds to buy a Series 2 and activate it for Prepay.

where did you find out about this promotion? just came off the TiVo site and don't see it. I have an old Series 1 that has lifetime sub. PERFECT use for an upgrade to HD! is this tooooooo good to be really true?

Also be careful - some DVD models came with Basic Service often touted as "Lifetime Basic" on ebay. While that is accurate (you don't pay TiVo for service) it is also misleading as the feature set is substantially reduced from regular service.
You can, however, subscribe these and pay for full service if you wish.

I got word of it in an email, since I have registered my TiVos on the web, and have a Lifetme activated before October 2003.
