Tivo phone cnxn "negotiating"

I recently bought a DirecTv Tivo (Hughes HDVR2) on craigslist.

Setting the phone connection up to record programs, I *70 to disable call waiting, then tried to call to get the access num, bers using my area code.

It was stuck on "negotiating" for about 20 minutes, then I got the message that it failed. I tried a system check, and get the same results when it tries to connect the phone.

Before I go on hold for 20 minutes w dave, any suggestions on what I can try on my end?

BTW I have several other DVrs that work aok! The pohone jack works with a phone plugged into it, and I have tried 2 seperate phone lines.

Did you change the number to call for your area? Go to Directv Central>messages and settings>settings>phone>change phone settings>dial in number
the above is message trail for 6.3e if you have a different system it should be similar
press the right arrow key to get to the number(it may be neccessary to press the down arrow once)enter the new area code and continue to press the right arrow until you find the correct format for your area (for example in my area it requires area code +number) some areas are number only while other areas require 1+area code+number. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I did change the area code to my area. It is running on version 6.1.1.

I normally do not leave the phone connected. I will tonight in hopes it detects it needs to "make a call" to update the software. Hopefully tha will correct it.

I finally called dave, who told me to call Tivo. I called Tivo (who thought it was odd that dave told me to call them) who could only suggest i try a neighboring area code for a number to call.

So I went back into phone setup, and even thought Tivo told me there were 3 nlocal number in area code 763, I changed it to area code 612 (which is still local) and BADA BING it worked.

It should do a software reboot tonight at 2:00 am to complete the upgrade of all the data its been collecting all day.

I will check it on Saturday to see if it worked.
