Restored Backup - Acct Status?
Just restored a lifetimed TCD140060 unit with a version 4 backup image. Immediately upon boot, I was thrown into guided setup. When the unit makes its first setup call, it starts through the various stages like setting the clock, etc. Then it gets to the part where it tries to get "account status". This fails after about 5 minutes. I've tried twice. What can I do now?

You could try using a newer image. I had the same thing happen recently when my 8.3 TCD240 crapped out and I loaded a 7.2.2 backup. After reimaging with 8.3, I had no problems.

But shouldn't the account status be tied to the box's hardware? The reload of the OS should have no effect on it, right? Isn't it getting the TSN from hardware, transmitting it to Tivo via phone line, and authenticating?

Is the image you used a backup from the same tivo? If not, you have to do a "Clear & Delete Everything" to marry the new image to the hardware TSN.

It's one that I downloaded a while ago from a "secret ftp site". But it goes straight to guided setup as soon as I plug it in. How can I get to the "clear and delete everything" option without going through the setup that insists on running?

Either get a recent verion, or hack it and run the fake setup script (I forget what it is called), then upgrade the software.
