Direct tv recivers and standalone tivo do I need to use old dtv receivers?

My tivo is dying. I went to Best buy to get a new Tivo. The salesperson told me that new direct tv receivers and standalone tivo no longer work together. Directv is supposedly doing something to the signal so you can't change channels. So your forced to either use their dvrs or find receivers on ebay. I find this hard to believe but ...

My old hughes receiver died died about six months ago. Direct tv sent me a replacement receiver and Tivo (series 1) couldn't change channels. I tracked down another hughes receiver to solve the problem.

Anyway is this true? Should I stay with a standalone tivo( which I sortof prefer)and use old receivers or breakdown and get a directvdvr.? I haven't heard the best things about them, at least the 15 model. Do the Directv dvrs do they have the wish list? That's non-negotiable to me.

There's a TiVo-Cable/Satellite Box Compatibility Guide here.

If you don't see the model listed there, do a search for it on the boards and you'll probably find someone who has experience using it.

Instead of trying to make a regular sat receiver work with a TiVo, you should see if you can find a DirecTV DVR/TiVo, such as the R10, or a DSRxxx model. If you want to go the separate units route, then just about any DirecTV standalone receiver will work (except the D11, which I hear has problems).

No you can use a Standalone Directv Receiver unit and a Standalone Tivo unit. What the Salesperson told you is utter rubbish!!!

Your best bet would be to get a Directv/Tivo unit. It is a all in one Receiver and DVR unit, as JimSpence has said.

Going the SA Directv and Tivo way, any of the Directv units work. I have a RCA420RE, 3 D10's, a D11 and a D12. All work with tivo, altho the D11 does have problems with the IR Blaster. The D12 fixed that problem.

The earlier models (420RE, D10 etc) can use the Low Speed Data connector, which works great!
