Question The Tivo Service

I know this is a dumb question and has been asked many times before (at least I hope) but

Do I really need to purchase the monthly subscription plan in order to use my Tivo? I am not looking for all the season pass info, i am just looking to be able to use a DVR that just records at the times i tell it like a digital VCR. Is there any way I can do this or do I have to buy the monthly subscription plan to be able to use the Tivo at all?

Your help is greatly appreciated for this tivo N00b!!!!!!

Get a DVD recorder with 'TiVo Basic' service which doesn't need to be subbed OR an old Series 1 TiVo which records manually without service with no EPG data.

If you don't want the TiVo functions, then just get a Cable DVR. You clearly have no idea what great things TiVo has to offer, so why even bother? Get the Cable DVR and live the blissfully ignorant life.

Or, you can give TiVo a chance and see how beneficial Season Pass, Wishlist, Swivel Search, Amazon Download, TiVoCast, Dual Tuner, TiVoToGo, and all the other TiVo extras can be.

i don't have cable. i just want something to record my television shows off basic antennae and don't want to spend much. i saw a tivo at a second hand store and bought it but it didn't work. they then had a series 2 for $50 and i just wanted to know if i needed a subscription in order to setup even manual recordings. and right now i am a bit strapped for cash.

In order for any S2 TiVo's to work you MUST have a subscription. You can't setup manual recordings without a subscription.

This thread is trying to sove just about the same problems:

Your best bet is to try and find a Series one unit like Tivo Troll suggested.
