Thumbs up Steps to take, to free up space

Ideally I wanted to resize my hda7 partition on the fly without removing my drive or performing a restore. I didn't have to do much reading to come to the conclusion that this is either impossible or extremely complex (at least for me)

So the next thing to do is see how much space I am using, & how much space I can free up.

I did df -h I had these results
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda7 124M 91M 27M 77% /
/dev/hda9 124M 23M 94M 20% /var

So I deleted files that I knew where unnecessary (tivoapp backup, logs, archives, etc) and I ran
e2fsck -y /dev/hda7 and then rebooted.

Now it is looking much better. When I do a df -h I now have these results
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda7 124M 56M 61M 48% /
/dev/hda9 124M 6.6M 111M 6% /var

I then looked at what is using my space
cd /; du -sxb *|sort -rn

Here are the results:

du: proc/386/fd/4: No such file or directory
67472659 proc
24393239 tvbin
8691061 lib
6510285 var
6428746 tivo-bin
5367612 ptvupgrade
3799042 sbin
2520676 bin
2361660 TivoWebPlus
1155366 tvlib
858554 enhancements
703454 etc
516003 busybox
361940 init
50510
25942 opt
12288 lost+found
3115 dev
2048 mnt
1314 LICENSE
1250 clearhistory.sh
1029 hacks
1024 vartest
1024 install
1024 initrd
1024 hack
1024 etccombo
1024 dist
1024 backups
204 test.conf
96 test.sh
8 tmp
0 TivoWebPlus.i
0 &1

My first question is regarding the message: du: proc/386/fd/4: No such file or directory
Is this an orphaned file? Why didn't e2fsck take care of this? How can I resolve this?

Also there are multiple directories that appear to be the same. For instance off the root I have a bin directory and in /ptvupgrade I have a bin directory. How do I know what I need and what I don't?

Ideally there is a way or a script that can find and display duplicate files and there locations. To go with that, a way to see which is being used and which file can be deleted.

Ways I know to see which file is being used:

Look at paths in rs.sysinit.author file
Use ps aux, example ps -aux | grep ptvupgrade shows
296 root 524 S /ptvupgrade/bin/dhclient
304 root 372 S /ptvupgrade/bin/tivoftpd
329 root 376 S /ptvupgrade/bin/vserver
330 root 360 S /ptvupgrade/bin/tserver
402 root 688 S /ptvupgrade/bin/tivoftpd
(which brings another question, why does tivoftpd have to multiple processes running? Is one of them a zombie?)

If you can, please elaborate with idea’s and suggestions. Thanks
