defective recordings

I've owned my TiVo HD since July 2008.

I just discovered today that two one-hour programs that I recorded in the last couple of months or so are defective. I had transferred them over to TiVo Desktop for temporary storage, along w/many others.

When I tried to play the two defective programs using Windows Media Player, I got an apparently stationary green screen with variable yellowish horizontal bands across it. The fast forward/rewind button that normally appears below the screen is absent. The two programs are also noticably longer than they should be: I have other episodes of these one-hour SD programs which are about 1150 - 1450 MB; the two bad ones are in the 1800 - 1940 MB range.

I transferred one of the programs back to the TiVo hard drive. The program played normally up to the 44 minute mark, then froze. Also, programing info and the bar length indicated program length of 1 hour 20 minutes, which is incorrect.

Any idea what's going on? Is there anything I can do to reduce the likelihood of this happening again?
