cable box question

I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but I'm taking the lazy way out.
First off, I have a Sony svr 2000, a Scientic Atlanta 3250HD and a 42" Panasonic plasma.
I have tried every way in the book to hook this system up, but I can only record what I'm watching. Is this the only option that I have? Can't I watch one show and record another? Would exchanging the box for a cable card change this problem?

A cable box typically outputs only one channel. You may be able to record one channel while recording another IF your cable provider includes some unencrypted channels in the cable feed. IOW Do all of your TVs require cable boxes?

If there are unencrypted channels, you can watch (or record) an unencrypted channel while recording (or watching) another channel thru the cable box.

To be able to do this, you'll need a 2-way splitter with a bandwidth suitable for use on your cable. Normally, you want the TiVo attached so that it can be used on any channel - ie on the cable box output, so that is the hookup I'm describing.
Connect as follows ...
- cable source to splitter common (input)
- one splitter output to the cable box input
- cable box output to TiVo input
- TiVo output to one input on the TV
- the other splitter output to another input on the TV
The connections between the cable box and TiVo and TiVo and the TV can use either RF or A/V cables, depending on what's available on your gear.

Get season passes for everything you ever watch, and then watch things from Now Playing while other things record in the background.

So, the new hard drive brought your SVR2000 back to life, eh?

The way to watch one show live and record at the same time is how it was described above.

I'm not even sure if I had a problem, but I've been wanting a bigger hard drive since I bought the Tivo. I hope that if I had a problem, that it was the old hard drive.
