2nd Tivo - MAK number and Software Version

I just purchased a used Series 2 unit w/ lifetime service and I had the unit transfered to my account. I noticed that the MAK on the second unit does not match my MAK from the first account. I was under the impression that each TIVO unit is assigned the same MAK under a single account? Is there something else I am supposed to do or will this get updated over time?

Also, the 2nd unit's software version number is 7.3 where as my 1st unit is 8.3. Will that get updated as well?

I ask this because I am unable to do any Tivo-to-Tivo transfers or see both units in Tivo Desktop.

You need the same Media Key to transfer recordings. Version 8.3 is the latest. Yes, you will get the upgrade automatically.

Thanks for the reply. How do I get the MAK updated on the 2nd unit?

If they are on the same account, all is well. It may take a day or two for the new(used) box to update and get the correct MAK.

Check out your account on tivo.com; you should see both TiVos under your account.

To do this, click on the "Manage My Account" link on the left side of the main tovi.com page. (If you don't have an account, first click on Register under "Create an Account" and create a tivo.com account.) Log in, and you should see the TiVos assigned to your account. For each TiVo, if it doesn't say "Transfers ALLOWED" under "Settings", you will need to click on the "DVR Preferences" link on the left side of the page, and then check the "Allow Transfers" checkboxes. (You can also give each TiVo a name.) Last, be sure to click "Save Preferences".

It may take a while for the information to be processed and handled by each TiVo. (Overnight should work if both TiVos are connected via broadband and not a phone line.) First you should see the assigned name for the TiVo show up under "System Information"; then you should see the MAK under "Media Access Key". Once this happens, all should be fine.

The software version shouldn't matter for any of this.
