I think Jordin does better with songs that have longer, purer notes as opposed to the fast peppy, quick note-changing songs, because the former shows off her ability to hold a pure note for more than a few seconds. I hope she gets back to those types of songs.
So in this sense maybe she's not completely adaptable to the different genres, but I think she's more adaptable than are Melinda or Lakeesha. And her young age makes it that much more impressive.

What in the world is a pure note? Why does everyone hate vibrato so much?
Natural vibrato is a sign of a relaxed voice that is working properly. A straight tone is not the natural state for a voice to be in.
You certainly don't want a tremolo like Cher and Elliot Yamin. Nor do you want a manufactured one like Chris Daughtry had, but a normal vibrato of about 5-8 pulses a second is a natural and healthy sound. It shows that the voice is moving freely without any undo pressure being applied to it.

By vibrato I mean singing in a manner that the frequency of the note oscillates within a small range of frequencies. In a way, it seems like cheating to me, because as long as the correct note is in the range, you're deemed to be on key.
But singing in pure steady notes like Jordin does is more challenging, because her notes are single frequencies, so even a small error will be noticable and deemed to be off key. The payoff is when they're on key. The fact that her single frequency notes are so accurately on key is a testament to her talent, and to me, it sounds so much prettier when somebody can sing in that manner. All my favorite popular singers are able to do this.

Oh, by the way, I talked to my 9 year old niece (She'll be 10 years old in 12 days from now.) again today about American Idol. She claims to know about 4 boys and 50 girls at school, and she said the the 4 boys all like Sanjaya and want him to win. She said the girls are mostly split between wanting Blake or Jordin to win. I was surprised because supposedly Sanjaya is rumored to be getting the young girl vote, but my niece says it's the boys who are voting for him.
Any of you have young nephews with lots of male friends you can ask, surveywise?

But it's not a single frequency, it's in the area but still a little bit under or a little bit over. The voice is still vibrating too, it's just doing it in a pinched manner.
Proper vibrato is centered around the core pitch that the singer is producing. Yes it oscillates above and below, but by doing that it actually centers the pitch so to the human ear it sounds perfectly in tune.
Straight tone can be downright grating on the ear. Next time you are forced to endure a Barbara Streisand song listen carefully. She loves to stretch out notes in a straight tone but she does it on the flat side of the pitch the entire time. ...Shudder...
One really good example of the pitch quality difference in straight tone or vibrato is found in Disney's Aladdin, especially in the song A Whole New World. The dude who singings Aladdin waits until the very end of his notes to relax his voice and let it vibrate. Until he does that he is dreadfully flat and sometimes even sharp. Once he lets it vibrate he is miraculously in tune.

Yes, I agree singing in straight pitches can sound terrible, and it is quite easy to sound terrible, because you have to be accurate or it's out of tune. In my personal taste, when it's done accurately, it sounds more beautiful than vibrato, but it takes talent to get those single pitches accurate, talent a lot of people don't have.
By the way, I'm downloading the bittorrent of this results show as we speak, and it's 81.2% done. It's taking hours to download though.

I don't know if I would call it talent, but it is does take a lot of effort to sing incorrectly all the time.

I asked my 10yo son about it and he says that they talk a lot about AI at school, but not usually about their faves. When I asked about Sanjaya he said that there are some girls that like him, but he doesn't know about the boys, and that most of the talk is about his hair.
For the earlier post: Yes, Sanjaya is improving each week (other than his audition, which was probably his best).

I don't usually like J-Lo but I really enjoyed her song.
As for Sangina, he's the next latin singing sensation.

I just watched the show last night after downloading the bittorrent. A user named tlrowley nicely PMmd a link to the torrent, and though it took hours to download, the resolution/viewing quality was excellent. Better than my TV I think. For some reason I had to upgrade my windows media player before it would play the torrent.
Wow, I think Haley butchered her song worse during her loser encore, than in her original performance on Tuesday, but I'm cutting her slack, because she was undoubtedly sad. And do you sing a happy, peppy song and having the bombshell just dropped on you like that? It's kind of sad they make the contestents do that. ("Pack your bags, you're gone - <music starts playing>, "Oh, sing your song again on your way out.")

Oh I will say, shockingly I think Sanjaya was one of the better singers this week. In the top 2 or 3, in my mind.
But during the results show, you could barely hear his voice. He didn't sing loud enough. But his performance on Tuesday was quite good in my opinion. These last few weeks he's really turned himself around. I'm not sure how he did it.
At this point, I don't consider him the worst guy. I think Phil is.
Also, isn't it ironic that we now have more men than women left in the competition? (4 men, and 3 women.) They were swearing up and down about how the women are so much better singers than the guys, yet look where we're sitting. I will say the 3 remaining women are probably the correct 3 who should be remaining. It will be really interesting to see which woman goes next, but I don't think it'll happen next week. (The axe will next fall on the male persuasion, I think.)

Good lord, man.....sanjaya sucks A$$ - bottom line. His singing is a complete and 'udder' suck job. Any of you wacks that think he is even decent need to put the bong down. He is the worst guy and the worst girl in the competiton to this point. He was sooo pitiful from the get-go that a grade up performance (this week), all of a sudden catapults him above others? The only entertainment value is to read about all the technical commenting about singing from the diaphram and all the science of the 'vibrato' and then in the same 'toke'n (get it? Put it down already) declare this kid better than others?

Oh, I'm not going so far as to say he's a good singer. These last few weeks have been better for him, but I don't know if it will stick. I think when voting time comes though, weight is given to that week's performance. Based on his performance this week, I agree with voters for not putting him in the bottom three.
But despite his recent improvement it's not like I put him in the top few. Well this week I do, based on this week's performance, but I think the other people did worse than normal this week, and he did better than normal, which vaulted him to #2 or #3 (in my mind) based on this week. I doubt he can hold that spot for future week's performances. Either some of the others will start doing better again, or he'll have an off week.

No matter how much you dislike sanjaya, if you don't dislike Chris R more, there is something wrong with you. At least sanjaya realizes how ridiculous it is that he's still around... that counts for something.

Well honestly, it is not that I really dislike him. Heck, sort of admire him for taking all this in stride. And....good point....Chris R blows as well. That whole 'turntable' run-dmc thing with his hand and that stupid bounce - that grinds me
Go Sanjaya - I'm in (well, not really, but I get it)

You have this annoying habit of occusing people of using drugs if they don't see it your way, here and in the Glad you're here thread.
Can you discuss a topic such as this without impuning one's character?

It's sad to me that a druggy such as yourself can kick my butt in any 360 games we play.
Maybe I need to start using.

I only use it selectively when people say something is funny that seems incredibly unfunny to me. Like spongebob or that new improv show. Or My Name Is Earl. Or Two and a Half Men.
About AI, well that just doesn't make sense. Unless you are talking about paula.
