DSL causing call in problems

I just got a new Tivo branded 80 hour series 2 DVR for my living room (I have an older Phillips model in my bedroom I've had for a few years). For some reason, it's unable to dial in to the Tivo call center unless I completely unplug my DSL line. One should know the following:

- new living room Tivo is not plugged into the same phone jack as the DSL
- the old Tivo in the bedroom calls in fine with no problem
- I put a DSL filter on the phone line I have the new Tivo plugged into, and that didn't fix the problem. I thought surely it would.

What could be causing this?

Thanks!

All phone jacks in the house are on the same line unless you have Two Phone numbers or more, so technically, the New Tivo is plugged into the same phone jack/system as the DSL.

Perhaps the New DSL filter is a bad one and not working, but this should not really create any problem.

Try plugging the New Tivo into the Wall outlet in the Bedroom where the old Tivo is. Then see if it dials in. If this works, then the problem is either the New DSL filter, or the actual Phone Jack itself.

If it still does not dial in on the known working line, then the problem is either the setup on the new Tivo Box, or some problem with the Tivo itself.

Have you correctly set up the Phone in options on the new Tivo by chance?

Not only does the new Tivo not call in when plugged into the same one that the old Tivo works fine on, but my DSL connection goes on the fritz when it's trying to. Also, I get to various stages of the call. Sometimes it will just peter out at "Could not connect." Sometimes it will get to "negotiating," then crap out, sometimes "service not answering" and so on.

It's really frustrating me. All my phone in options are correct I know, especially since it will make the call successfully if I completely unplug my DSL line......

Do you have a network set up with your DSL?
With a router, an approved wired adapter, and an ethernet cord (or there are wireless options), you could have your Tivo connect via the DSL internet instead of using its built-in dial-up modem.

Another plus for networking your Tivo: many enhanced features.

I am in agreeance with steve614. The Network setup would be a far better option if possible.

But it does sound to me like your Tivo units has a problem. Have you tried calling Tech Support at tivo? They may be able to help, or get a replacement unit.

Get your telco to install a voice/data filter at the entrance to your house. This should be of higher quality than using a DSL filter at each phone.
