Desktop 2.4 questions

Ok if I read it right- Desktop 2.4 adds support for other media files - MPEG, mov, WMV, etc...

So what I got from the instructions was that I only need to drop those files into the My TIVO recordings folder and when I look on the TIVO, I'd see them, and be able to transfer them to the TIVO to watch.

Well, my TIVO is not seeing them, but does see other TIVO files I transferred to the PC. So what's the scoop?

TiVo uses QuickTime to accomplish their transcoding, so you must have QuickTime installed on the PC for it to work. Also it does NOT support .avi files, only .mov, .mp4 and .wmv so make sure your movies are one of the supported formats as well.

Did you enter your plus key?

You have to pay for and enable the plus features if you want to use them. Without that, only the basic features that do not require any kind of transcoding will work. In that respect 2.4 is no different than 2.3a.

[edit]I didn't know about the quicktime connection, so perhaps my comments are all wet. I would treat anything Dan has to say as gospel.

Actually the Plus key point is valid. I had forgot that having Plus was a requirement for the transcoding feature.

Use other transfer software. TiVo Desktop 2.4 is not Vista compatible. You may be able to get 2.3 to work for TiVoToGo, and use TiVoDoTNet or PyTiVo for TiVoToComeBack. Another option is Galleon. This forum is full of threads on all of these, so a little time spend reading will give you many options to pursue along with insight as to which might best fill your particular needs.

so, if I purchase the plus key I will be able to transfer mpeg and wmv files from my computer to tivo and view these files on my TV? Is this true

This is great, but I feel that at $12.95 per month that I shouldn't have to pay for this service. TIVO needs to think about keeping its existing subscriber base.

You don't need to pay for TiVo Plus to get that functionality. There are two other FREE 3rd party apps that can do the same thing. They're called pyTiVo and TiVo.net. In fact they're even better then TD 2.4 because they support more formats.

You are paying $12.95 for the TiVo service, which is doing tis part to accept videof orm your PC, as part of the subscription for it.

TiVo Desktop's Plus features, due to licensing requirements, need separately paid for.
