Best HD for upgrade
Stuck a single factory-fresh Maxtor, Maxline III 250 Gb in my Tivo last weekend to replace a 180 Gb two drive setup.
At first it worked fine, then started to miss recordings - 'sorry you don't receive this channel' and peculiar recording skips as mentioned in another thread.
Put the old discs back and everything's fine.
My questions are:
What's the best disc for a 250 - 400 Gb upgrade?
Any known problems with Maxtors ( I subsequently unlocked it for PC testing and it tests fine with Maxblast). Actually should I have unlocked it before putting in in Tivo?
Thanks

Are you sure you installed the LBA48 kernel?
There's no need to unlock a drive before putting it in a TiVo - only after taking it out
My personal recommendation would be a Samsung HD400LD.

I used the MFSlive beta image. Not sure about LBA478
Everything seemed to work fine (it showed the right disc space for a 250 Gb), made calls over the network, season passes and most recordings transferred OK (although some were lost). Then after a couple of days it started to play up. Most odd.
Thanks for the advice on the HD though.

The advice comes from them being much quieter (almost silent) in a Tivo compared to a Maxtor and having a 3 rather than a 1 year warranty. Maxtors and Hitachis in particular seem to have shorter total lives in a Tivo. We used to also like Seagates but no longer as their increased power consumption in recent models means a Tivo can't handle running two of them together.
There would be nothing wrong with the Samsung HD300LD 300Gb(T series) drive though. It largely comes down to your capacity needs and the price you can get one for.

The symptoms you describe are consistent with no LBA48 kernel.
Although it has an updated version of mfstools, the MFSLive CD doesn't include copykern or tpip, one of which is required to copy the updated kernel and initialise the swap.
Reboot from the LBA48 CD and run copykern, specifying kernel option 1. It won't affect your settings or recordings and you don't need to re-image the drive.
