replacing hd w/ a slightly smaller hd

I've searched everywhere online to find a solution to my problem and see this forum as my last resort.

I upgraded my tivo series 2 from a 40gb hd to a 250gb hd probably 2 years ago. Now the hd is making a "clicking" noise and I want to replace it with another 250gb hd before it dies out. However, the new blank hd is slightly smaller by a few mb than the current 250gb hd.

I tried to use either "dd" command in linux or the "mfsbackup / mfsrestore" but both didn't work due to the slightly smaller new drive. Short of shelling out for another identical drive or a larger drive, is there a way I can basically duplicate the hd to the new one?

Thanks in advance for any help to this.

I don't know of any easy solution to that problem, unless you don't care about saving your existing recordings

I was once in your shoes in dec 2006 there were changes in guide data that caused my dvr to reboot i'm not saying that it's the same for you but, it was certainly one of my reason. I guess you could say it's was the baby boom for linux / tivo lol. But, BTUx9 is right you might loose some recordings but, you should be alright..

Spike is one of many that helped me out and honestly without them all I wouldnt be where I am now.
Click on Got Live? if you have questions feel free to ask away they have a great support team here and there
