Recording Problem with Older DVR
I have a second DVR which is an older standalone model (Philips 14-hour). There are times when a TV program has already started and it might be 20 minutes along. I want to record it from the beginning and, therefore, go to the "Record Saved and New Portion at Best Quality" option. The DVR should record the previous 30 minutes but it doesn't. It just records the New Portion only. I don't have any problems recording shows or any other DVR functions. Appreciate any help as to what might be going on?

I think it has to be subbed to record how you want.

If you choose to record at a different quality than what the default buffer is at you lose the buffer.

That might be why she said this.

JP, I believe classicsat is correct. Have you tried recording these already started programs by setting up a best quality manual recording with the actual start and end times.

Sorry for not responding to latest posts: In response to classicsat: I don't understand your comment "I think it has to be subbed to record how you want." In response to Mick66: I do set the standalone Philips DVR to manually record all the time with start and end times and it records just fine. In response to Jim Spence and his comment about the default buffer: My subscription Tivo DVR video recording quality preference is set for Medium. If I want to watch a 30-minute program which started at 8:00 PM and it's 8:28 PM, I can just press the red "Record" button on the Tivo remote control, and follow these screens: Go to Season Pass and Other Options, Record This Episode/Options, Record Program With These Options, Record Saved & New Portion at Best Quality. I don't choose the other option Record New Portion Only at Medium Quality because that function will not retrieve the previous 28 minutes. I believe that saved portions can only be retrieved at Best Quality no matter what the video quality preference is set for. Anyway, I seem to remember that my older standalone DVR used to function this exact same way but now it doesn't...and that's my dilemma.
Thanks again everyone...any new ideas?
JP

How do you want your Tivo to record? It has to be subscribed to do it that way.

But do you set up manual recordings for programs that have already started. If that works, that's what you need to do to record.

Thanks Mick. I just tested your suggestion and it worked! A show was already in progress at 4:20 PM so first I changed the Video Recording Quality to Best. Then I set a Manual Recording from 4:00 to 4:30 PM to retrieve the previous 20 minutes. Then I changed the Video Recording Quality to Basic and set a Manual Recording from 4:30 to 5:00 PM to record the rest of the show. Thanks to everyone else who also indicated that this was the issue...it just took a little clearer explanation.

You don't have to change the default recording quality before setting up the recording. You just have to choose the 'options' tab when it appears and change the quality for this recording to 'best'
