Thinking about upgrade to series 3

And I was curious, it seems implied in the threads I have reviewed, but want to make sure...

I have Comcast at home and if I get rid of my motorola box, will the Series 3 be able to record off the HD HBO channel as well as all the digital channels I currently have if I get the cablecard?

TYIA,
Rob

Yes. For lack of a better way to say it, the CableCards turn the S3 into a cable box.

LESS PPV and VOD. Not quite the same as a cable box.

And bugs and features are both differences, right?

Rob, your S3 will be able to record anything that you can get now except VOD. Some people are able to order PPV over the phone with their cable providers and view, if not record, PPV on their S3.

There have been a number of threads in here recently of people sitting on the fence and almost getting scared off by the vocal minority of naysayers in here. They've all had great experiences because even though the S3 isn't without its flaws, it is still far and away much better than the alternatives.

Thank you for the info! I was pretty certain that S3 would record HBO HD programming, but this confirms it.

I'm going to order the S3 and get the lifetime transfer before the offer expires and hope that all goes well. I am a little hesitant because of news I read on DSLReports this evening though... A article from Yankee Group that predicts TIVO will disappear by 2010, most likely bought by another company, they predict Comcast. Here is a link to the article I'm referring to:

I truely hope this does not come true!

They are full of it.

Lots of threads over in the Coffee House talking about it.

you dont think one of the big cable or sat companies will snatch them up? Do explain why you dont. It makes complete sense to me that one of them would buy tivo. That would give them some big leverage in the STB market having their software.

Even if they get bought, that doesn't mean they go away.

another typo

Boy I hope that none of the carriers acquire them. You could pretty much say goodbye to innovation at that point, and none of the carriers are smart enough to figure out new business models to support any new features beyond just charging additional fees to the customer. At least that's been my impression of old, bloated, big business.

I know it's been mentioned before, but a Google or a Yahoo would be the best fit. In the end, if advertising is still going to financially support broadcasted content, then TiVo ultimately has to become an extended advertising platform. It has to be done thoughtfully though, and in a measured way (something Google has done well). I hope whoever acquires TiVo, if that happens, it's somebody who is open to co-marketing, co-branding, partnering, etc. so that any innovation is not automatically assigned a fee from the customer. I'm not sure the carriers can think too far beyond that.

Easy - they don't want one of the MSOs, they want to stick around and deal with ALL of them.

Not VOD, but you can with PPV, if your cable company supports it. If you can order it, you should be able to tune it on the S3 if you have CableCARDs and the cable company authorizes them properly.
