Still need cable cards without HD?
So I am moving to California (from Washington D.C.) for a couple of months for work, and I am not taking my HDTV with me. Of course, I cannot live without my TIVO. I still need cable cards installed at my new place in California, even if I no longer care about getting HDTV?

You'll need the cards for any encrypted digital cable (ESPN, etc.). You won't need them with analog stations and digital stations transmitted in the clear (probably locals only).

The TiVo Series 3 works well with analog cable without CableCards - most of us ran that way while waiting for our CableCards to show up (I certainly did). You will still have dual-tuner functionality too. Just remember that the Series 3 doesn't have coax out - you'll need to connect to your TV via one of the other outputs (svideo, component, etc.).

I would get a cheap used S1 box on ebay and leave my precious S3 safe at home.

I am considering doing that- I still own the series 2 40 hour box. The problem is the series 2 has a lot less memory and no dual tuners...
As for "not caring" about HD- obviously i still care, but there is no way I can move my HD tv across the country twice within 5 months and cannot afford to get an HD TV for just 5 months (plus, my new job is going to involve 16 hours a day at the office, so most of my "tivo" watching is going to be done via slingbox).

I know you said 'most', but if that's the case, just leave all Tivos at home & use slingbox for everything???

i will be breaking my lease on my old APT and getting a new place when I return, so leaving it at my old place is not an option. I considered setting up at someone else's house in DC, but sports are really not very watchable via slingbox, and I at least want to be able to watch sportscenter in the morning before work...
