can't get modem to connect for updates
I got an error message today that the Tivo has not been able to update for nearly 2 weeks. Tried the number check, and it fails to connect to the server. I was able to get the list of numbers in my area, so the phone connection is fine. I have had this unit for 2 years and this is the first time I have had this problem. Any ideas how to fix it? I tried the secondary number for my area, and it still failed to make the connection.
Thanks for any information,
Janie

The only thing you need worry about is if your software is not up to date ,but since you have had it for 2 years i am sure it is. The guide info comes from the sattelite. Technicly speakig you dont need to make the call they will just bug you with nag messages. I have seen people say they have gone years with no call. Just go in and delete them evry now and again.
Btw there really is no updates happening if you have a series 2 at 6.2 or r10 at 6.1. The last version for series 1 escapes me.

OH I thought it needed updates for the programming information -- but that's all through the satellite, right? Then I'm not going to worry about it. THanks very much!
EDIT: Would you say that I could unplug that connection to the phone? We have kind of an inconvenient setup. If this isn't really necessary, then I would just as soon get rid of it.

Get rid of it. My DirecTivos haven't been connected to a phone in 250 days and 1,363 days respectively. I get the daily nag message, click past it and go on with my Tivo watching.

Delete the nag messages once in a while or you may lose the ability to go into messages. It will freeze if you have too many.

...Or just don't bother deleting them, and don't bother going into the messages screen. When was the last time Directv sent any REAL information via messages anyway?

Me, too
I have a SAT T60 from 2002 or before.
About 6 months ago the modem quit and I, too, have been getting the daily nags.
I don't want to fix it because it is so old. FIOS is tempting me, but I heard they don't have wishlists.
One thing I wonder though--my daughter ordered a pay-per-view. Would they know to bill us? If not, then I need to just send in the extra money.

Not until your receiver calls in.

And they would apply it to next month's bill. Don't confuse them by sending in extra money for PPV's that aren't on your bill. You can order 3 or 4 and the access card will be full. No more PPV's until the receiver can upload the data.

Daily Call
Might sound like a silly question since it is already been posted here-I just want to make double sure. I have tried to get my DirecTV TiVo to make a daily call for almost 2 months. the DirecTV people are out of ideas, so they sent me a replacement-only problem is it is the R15 that i have heard horrible things about. And they expect me to send my TiVo to them even though I own it. I have been hesitant to do the a swap because I love my TiVo and everything else is great. They (DirecTV) keep telling me it will stop working without the daily call, but as I have read here this is not the case? Can someone just reassure me of this so I can send the R-15 back to them-they want to charge me unless they get one back. And does anyone know if it is possible to repair the daily call feature? The modem sounds good so I am wondering if the jack in the box went bad-keep getting no dial tone, or could not connect... Thanks for any help.

Was my statement in post #4 not enough? Do you want me to take a picture of the nag screen and a recent recording? Today will be 1,365 days with a phone call and the GXCEBOT works fine. My HR10-250 hasn't made a call in about 270 days and it also records without failure.

Seems to be a question asked hundreds of times on this site, but yet noone seems to believe it.
Both of my DTivo's have gone over a year without being connected to a landline.
