Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

I guess they finally sorta made the book into a TV show. I watched it through alternative means and while certain bits have been removed, it still had some of the humor of the book. I am guessing they took out the certain parts (discussed in the article) because if it becomes a series, they don't want it to be hard sci-fi. Also those elements were also sorta seen in the "Shada" and "City Of Death" episodes of the original Doctor Who series.

This was a one off so far, right? Didn't do it enough for me to watch to the end.

From what I read it was a pilot episode. Not sure what ratings the BBC goes by to pick up a show.

FWIW, the Dirk Gently was played by Stephan Mangan, who currently stars in HBO's new sitcom Episodes.

Was about to post this in the UK Chit Chat then the search found your thread...

Dirk Gently to return to BBC4
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011...return-to-bbc4

No dates though - I guess they'll need to film it first

Poor Steven Mangan. I'm sure he's upset about all the commuting he'll have to do between the UK (Dirk Gently) and the US (Episodes).

I hope he can find a way to live with it.

I've read the book a couple of times and laughed a lot while reading it.
I saw this pilot when I was in the UK over Christmas and thought it was OK, but nothing special. My wife hated it!!!

I'd watch more though

Finally got around to watching this last night and enjoyed it. Dirk definitely has a Doctor Who vibe to him, although that's to be expected given the source material. It'd been a long time since I read the novels so I had to refresh my memory via Wikipedia. (I noticed "electric monk" was written on the white board before he started repainting it).

So, how do I get my hands on an iPhone with a 16-year standby battery life like Gordon Way's? I guess if he could build a time machine he could figure that out too ...

Pretty much the whole book was on the wall. Coleridge, Lewis Carroll, the electric monk, the bored horse, Kubla Khan. Everything that didn't make it into the show.

I liked the tone. I thought they did a great job of capturing the feel of the book. I wonder how they could maintain that if they did go to a series. Has there been any word whether that's a possibility?

As a longtime HHGG fan, I was delighted when a buddy of mine sent me a copy of the first Dirk Gently novel, signed by DNA himself. I was initially a bit put off by the dark quirkiness of the main character but warmed up to him a bit by the second book. I listened to the radio adaptations and found them a bit hard to follow. I watched the first episode of the series and, despite its changes from the book, found it pretty good. In fact, I rather liked the TV Dirk Gently more than I'd liked him in the books. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of the series as it becomes available.

No indication on when it would go to BBCA. I guess it depends on how successful it is in the UK. Some people choose to acquire it in other ways.

I guess the fact that there was no Blu-ray of the first season should have been a clue...

Hmmm ... will have to "find" those three episodes as I guess they will never air on BBCA now (or if they did, I missed them).

Really liked the show. Sorry it wasn't renewed. It didn't have much of a budget in the first place. I doubt you could pay the cast and crew if it was cut much more.

Just watched the first episode. It was funny and enjoyable.
