What gives?? Desktop icon not working, tray icon working...

I was trying to set a wireless network up for my sister. She uses the McAfee firewall. At first TiVo Desktop didn't work. Pictures, music, transferring shows... etc. TiVo could download program info fine. I opened a list of ports TiVo recommended and her pictures and music showed up fine. But...

When I open TiVo Desktop with the desktop icon, it won't transfer shows. However, when I open TiVo Desktop using the icon in the system tray, it works fine. I would put this down as a weird oddity except... it does this exact same thing on her laptop as well!!!

Both are Gateway computers, both run Windows XP, both have McAfee firewall.

What the heck is happening here??? Sure she can just always use the system tray icon but it bothers the heck out of me.

Note: I tried to search for the answer before asking. Thanks for any help. I love this board!!!

Maybe it’s an account privilege problem? Tivo desktop may be installed to only run under accounts with admin privileges. Does the XP user account being used have admin privileges when you use the desktop icon? I’m assuming the desktop icon in the system tray is loaded at startup under admin privileges, and the desktop icon is being used under a user account which is restricting its use.

Thank you for your great suggestion. However, I know my sister has only one XP user account. So wouldn't that mean both the desktop icon and the system tray icon would load up with the same priviledges? It is intriguing to ponder that there is something different between those two icons though.

I just guessed that since this happened on BOTH of her computers, there should be someone who has encountered this before. I will do some testing next time I am at my sister's house though. It is really intriguing.
