newbie question about stand alone box

Hi all, hope I'm posting in the right spot.

I just got one of the basic Tivo 'stand alone' boxes
model # TCD540040, Series 2.

I want to use it with roof top antenna and without
Tivo's program guide, to save money.

I have done this before but can not remember how
to set it up.

Thanks in advance,
Bukzin

You can find what you want by doing a search in this forum for "Theft of Service". Read all the responses and counter arguments and you will get a clear picture of what the rest of the replies will be.

local OTA only

If I only want to use the tuner in my Series 2 and not Tivo's program guide
is that stealing?

Is it do-able with the Tivo box I have?

Series 1 tivo could be used to manually record like a "dumb VCR." Series 2 requires a subscription to be useful. You won't be able to manually record or basically do anything with an unsubbed series 2, except use it as a paperweight!

You can use the tuner sure, you just cannot record without the TiVo DVR service (and I do mean DVR service, not guide data service), and there is no guide-less discount. If you want a DVR that records without service, a Series 2 TiVo is not what you want.
