keeps rebooting

i have had the HR10-250 for about a year now. within a couple months of getting it, it started rebooting at random until it got to the point where it would freeze every time during boot up so i couldn't get it to boot up all the way.

they replaced that one with a new (actually refurbished) unit. and it has worked well for a while but lately it has started randomly rebooting again. it hasn't been too frequent though - maybe once aver 3-4 weeks. but in the past week it has done it like 4 times and tonight it did it twice. it always comes back up but its still annoying. the thing is, i hate to have them replace it again because its a royal pain to get the new unit and have to set up and my preferences and season passes and what now all over again.

so what i am wondering is if i were to replace it again, is it possible to copy the data off the current hard drives on to the new unit and not have to reenter all my settings again?

or better yet - is there some some reason why it keeps doign this and some way to fix it?

Im no expert by any means, but have you checked for overheating? If your box is in an entertainment center with glass on the front or otherwise poor ventilation it will reboot.

yea i thought about that too - but i am pretty sure its not a het issue.

it is in an entertainment center with a glass front but the back is completely open and there is plenty of clearance behind it for airflow. and no part of the tivo is even slightly warm to the touch. so i am not sure it is a heat issue. and i have tried leaving the door to the entertainment center open it it still happens.

plus it has worked fine for several months.

We had a similar issue some time ago. What we did that seemed to have eliminated the rebooting was to clear all saved recordings (watched and deleted them all), clear all Season Passes and TO DO items; turned off Suggestions ....

My assumption is that I had a damaged block or something on disk .... I never had to go to the next (drastic) measure of a Clear & Delete & Reset - which can take a long time and has its on issues (from what I've read here)... Good luck.

hmm well perhaps i will try clearing ll the recorded shows and turning off suggestions, but i hope not to cancel and rebuild all season passes because we have a ton of them and that would take some time.
