Question Series 2 DirecTV Tivo Large Disk Problem

I have a single drive DirectTV Series 2 HDVR2 running 6.2 software.

I upgraded to a single Maxtor 120GB drive about a year ago without a problem. However, I now need more space ! I purchased the Universal Boot CD version 11 from DVRUpgrade which has LBA48 support. After booting, my new 320 GB Western Digital HDD reports the correct size on hdb (secondary IDE1).

I restored from my Tivo.bak image using the following:
mfsrestore -s 127 -xzbpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdb

With my Fat32 drive as primary IDE1 and my new large Tivo drive as secondary IDE1 and my CD is primary on IDE2.

However, this drive doesn't work in my unit. I get to the blue DirecTV splash screen, it stays on this screen for several minutes and I can hear HDD activity, then a green screen flashes for a few seconds saying a fatal error has occurred (sorry, it only appears for a few seconds so it's hard to read) and then the unit reboots. This happens continuously. I never get to the Tivo menus.

I tried several things:
1. Not using the -x switch and testing first with the tivo.bak 40GB size. Same problem occurs.

2. I tried configuring a clean Maxtor 120GB HDD using the exact same procedure and it worked fine so the problem seems to be the large western digital size.

3. I tested the 320 GB Western Digital drive and it tests OK.

4. I thought of replacing the kernel, but I have a Series 2 and everything I read said that all Series 2 Tivo's support LBA48. Nonetheless, I tried the "CopyKern" program on the universal boot cd with no luck. Same problem.

Any ideas?

mfsrestore -r 4 -s 127 -xzbpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdb

Strange thing is now that I have added more space and hacked my Tivos, I watch less TV than before...

I wound up using Instant Cake to put a new OS on the large drive which worked OK. Nonetheless, I appreciate the suggestion and will probably need it in the future as I want to backup and restore my own images so I don't lose all my settings.
